potato flakes do make it a little opaque. however, you can take the paper towel off the top and hold it up to a light and you can see through it then. that will help you see additional colonization points if there are any.
grain water agar, which you can watch a video on through my signature, comes out much clearer. but they both work great and will get the job done regardless!

I haven't removed my paper towels in probably 6+ generations of plates. you can see i have shit written all over them. never see the need to remove it.

what you can't see is that those towels have been turned over and some even refolded. I bet a few have even seen 10+ generations. I tossed a bunch after I accidentally bought those cheap half-plastic feeling paper towels. brawny or equal all the way for me now.

*puts paper towel back on*
So can I just have a SHIP on my minirounds and cover it with papertowel? Or should one always use micropore tape/polyfil?

Mike, I like how you swipe in a line. You can definitely stretch a print far that way. I may give that a try next time I'm germinating from a print.

That's what I do. I've recycled them tons, crossed out old markings with Sharpie, flipped them around to have new paper, folded them over again the other way, etc.
I have a myco notebook I use with all of my notes and recipes and shit in it. Recently I've added an agar section for easier labelling. Different recipes or varieties or whatever get a specific marking. It frees up space.
For example, in my notebook, I'll have AA+ MS (Soft Agar) = * * and then put 2 circles on all of the initial transfers of AA+ from MS. It's way easier to just put 2 Sharpie dots on the paper towel, heh.

I color coded my agar last night for soft/hard, but still need to write down species and shit. Definitely was pouring my plates WAY too thin back in the day, I reckon.

Yeah I've had a few grows where I have to remember what the fuck 'Fiji Gen. 6 Tub 2 Flush 3 Print 2' means.
I keep thinking the more detailed I write it the more I'll be able to remember what the fruit looked like and what to expect from it but the truth is I have no fucking clue sometimes where these spores came from.
EDIT: But the time I get it to dishes it literally the above would read 'F6T2F3P2J1G2G2:11'
Although It literally says what it is in cryptic code that you can read about it's exact history, it says absolutely nothing about the grow except for when I occasionally label a print 'Big Cap'

My loop is giving me troubles. If I dip it in the receiving plate to cool it down before hitting the spore print, it melts the agar and leaves a chunk stuck on the loop. Do I just hold the loop still in the SAB for a while before going to the print?

What's wrong with getting agar on the loop? It just makes picking up spores easier.

I guess I figured it'd be bad. Is there no chance it'd make the spores on the foil germinate?

I very never had a problem. I try not to leave agar behind on the print and any small amount that dose get left behind will dry quickly. I rairly use a print more than once anyway though.

I do make prints, but I'd still like to be able to go back and reuse my originals. It's not like every print I use is going to germinate first time.
