Ajahn Don said: I wish someone had warned us about the smell. Ok, warned me. The missus-after-seven-o'clock tonight is not happy about it. Oat water agar is not on the list of options anymore.
Still a hundred degrees. Not opening the windows.
Wait, what smell? Grain water agar should make less smell than PCing the grains
I boil the agar for 5 minutes to thicken it. Bringing the oat grain water up to a boil was smelly. In the PC now, so I have no idea what it's going to look like. Tried a new agar. It came in bags and was strings like pasta. I added red food coloring in honor of my alma mater, the Univ of Arkansas Razorbacks. Go Hogs!
Woo pig, sooie!

My grain water didn't smell at all last night. I thawed it by placing the Tupperware on top of my meat rack, resting on top of a boiling pot of water. I strained the thick goop via paper towel until it was clear liquid. No smell at all. Then I did Pasty's Tek to a T and again, no smell.

Don't drink coffee so I have none. Only have a coffee grinder for agar.

For condensation, it seems to have been defeated by stacking the plates and placing hot water on the top most plate.
I don't have access to glad mini here, and so the plates, especially the lid tightness, are questionable. I'll be cooling them in a moist SAB with holes covered to reduce that vacuum contamination. Condensation becomes a vector when excess water breeds bacteria(?). I'm cloning wild.

bacteria has to be there for it to breed though so it's mainly a problem with spores/technique

How much do you guys spray down your SAB before using? I usually spray Lysol on the walls, wipe them down to clean shit, and then soapy water around the sides (not the top because I can't see if I do). Then I shower and come out and use it after 20m or so. Any issues with that?

I always see people posting that they wait 20+ minutes but i swear I've read RR post you only need to wait a few seconds for the mist to settle, that is what I've always done ...maybe i'm doing ti wrong though i'm no pro and I've had my share of hurdles

Yeah, I often come out of the shower and then spray down and use it ASAP. The 20 is just because I'm showering, not for any logical reasoning.
I just drilled a 1/4" hole into the top of SAB so I can take good pictures of cultures in there. I figure the phone will block contaminants.

I just get a paper towel moist with alcohol, give it a good wipe down, set everything up, mist, then immediately get to work.

Word. Man, I won't lie, I fucking hate agar work. My SAB sucks, I can never EVER get a chunk of myc out in one piece, my lids are being shitty, I hate wearing the suit, etc. Just made 2 of the worst LI's ever because I couldn't get the agar chunk out in one piece. Hope they're still viable. But whatever, this is agar.
Anyway, used my loop to put spores on a bunch of plates. Got Golden Teacher, AA+, PF Classic on about 3 plates each. Also made 3 more transfers from my iffy PE plate as well.
Here's a shot of one of the plates through my new peekaboo hole in the lid.
