So I got my agar and whipped up a batch, green for St. Patrick's day. Went to PC it and my weight never got to jingling. It shot steam for awhile, but the weight just sat there. Eventually the steam started to diminish, which I think meant that it was starting to dry boil. I shut it off, but I'm kinda confused about wtf is going on here.

I put enough water to come up just below the lil spacer plate on the bottom. Do I need more water? I don't think the water level should come up to the PP5 minirounds. I had it on a medium heat for awhile, then put it on high so the pressure didn't build too fast. Is it possible that in doing so I used up the water before it reached pressure? This is what I got, Mirro 22qt

You need to elevate the plate with jar rings or something. Start on high till it jiggles then back down the heat. Wait for a good head of steam before putting the weight on.

Ah, I had the weight on from the get go. They need to make these instructions more clear. Now I look like a retarded noob.

Naa it's all good we all make mistakes. I use about an inch or barely over of water. Never came close to running dry. I have the 16 quart mirro. If it starts steaming good and you put the weight on and it doesn't pop the little button and steam starts coming from it hold down it for like 2 seconds with something and it should spring up. I can't get my rocker to just move every two or three minutes as most will tell you to do so I get it down til it stops then barely turn back up till it moves slow and steady IME. For some good tips and information check out the links in my signature.

This is mainly regarding All-American brand pressure cookers.

I never could get the cheap PCs to softly whistle at me, it was either lots of rocking or none at all

I did some searching around and it seems like these weights aren't even designed to rock, instead they're only supposed to hiss steam out. I think I had the heat set waaaaay too high, as the weight was just shooting jets of steam nonstop.

read the instruction manual. ALL PCS ARE NOT CREATED EQUAL :blast: . It will tell you when exactly it is at correct pressure and how to maintain that pressure. Bet you could find the manual online for free.

Actually the manual sucks. It doesn't even mention the fact that you're supposed to build pressure before adding the pressure control weight. All it says is inspect the vent, fill with food/water, turn burner on high, and the weight will jiggle. Wtf Mirro

because they're expecting you to cook food in it. If you buy canning jars and follow their canning/sterilization directions it will tell you about the venting since you're using the PC for sterilization rather than cooking.

Just looked at one of my jar packages, and you are correct.

Fuuuuuuuuck I even looked in the manual, and there's a separate section on canning. :facepalm3:

Is the only reason for the GE hole for the PCing process?  Regular plates don't have GE holes so I'm assuming it's just to keep things 'even' during the sterilization.

They usually have "vents" or little tabs that keep the top slightly separated from the bottom of the dish.

We also wrap them in breathable parafilm or plastic wrap.

Regular dishes do get GE.

Petris don't really require a lot of GE, but nothing in this hobby is ever completely sealed.

Ever PC a jar without a filter? You end up with a vacuum.

As pussy said, plates do have GE.

Is the paper towel to stay on during the whole process even post inoculation?

Also, instead of wrapping in foil can one just put a bunch of the mini rounds inside a tyvek envelope and place in the pc like that?

I completely seal my ziploc containers, until fully colonized despite how they're being used.
The agar dish ones aren't ever opened unless inoculating from them.  They can get tossed around in the fridge for months.
No parafilm or plastic wrap involved...

I like to write my lable notes on the paper towel which saves me having to scrub it off or try and fiddle with tape on the sides. There is no reason you can't remove it tho.

Not sure how well putting them into a tyvek envelope would work. We don't get them for free up here in Canada so I have had little reason to use them for anything.

Ok, that does not mean it's optimal.
