I use the herb jars I think. The half pint wide mouth shouldered jars? I use them for cold storing, since they're hard to see in. Maybe I have something different.

Agar is found at Asian/oriental markets. It's pretty cheap too. Just read the ingredients and make sure it doesn't have sugar in it. (Telephone Brand Agar Agar is pretty common where I live)

i still have never used grocery store agar. i started with pre mix from vendors "just add water" lasted 3 months. and i didn't just do some plates here, and there, i was making it a lot

seemed worth it to me, still does. i just buy regular agar from amazon/e bay now and make my own, but still pretty cheap for getting a good product. not that telephone/etc is bad, just seems easier to me to buy a lot specifically meant for making culture plates up front, and not worry about it for a while.

I just use all the Grainwater from the soak and add agar 10g per 500ml or 2%
Super results, super easy. Cheap!!!!!

I have a question. After you've done a transfer or two, and you know you have a clean culture, can you just make a couple of extra plates and store them for a later grow? I saw that he mentioned storage in the OP, but wasn't sure if he was talking about before or after inoculation.

Yes, you most certainly can. If you stumble across some exceptional genetics, I suggest you research how to "slant" your culture for long term storage. Plates/jars can be used for long term storage as well, but test tubes are superior.
