I don't wash the lids or change the tape anymore either. Still run water and a scrub brush into the cups but don't use soap. The paper towels are reusable too, and they stack into neat little towers for easy storage between uses. I've got roughly 30 paper towels that have been through multiple PC cycles. If I could just figure out a way to not rip the foil the entire process would be waste free.

I save my foil too,
I just pack it on like a lid and pull it off like one if that makes sense? I'm PCing some pasty plates now but the aluminum foil also stacks neatly in a pile.

Yep, I save the paper towels as well. I use a nice pen to write their numbers on them and keep track of what is what in an Excel sheet, e.g., B2 being the original, B2-A and B2-B being my transfers, etc.
I always wind up tearing most of my foil when I try and flatten them back out for storage.

I only did the paper towel thing once. WE go through enough paper towel in my house as it is. It just didn't seem worth it.

I'm confused on how that quote got so butchered. those aren't pf-cakes. they are agar plates with oyster mushrooms that have been setting out for a long ass time.
when I birth pf-cakes, I vigorously rub them against the palm of my hand while simultaneously running them under the water faucet to get all the dry verm layer off. I do this completely indiscriminately. so yeah, I do end up removing that.

So here is a photo of the underside of my agar plate, same one I posted a picture of last night. As you can see the.... whatever it is.

Looks like it is crystallizing to me. I think it is just some of the instant mash potato powder I used.

No clue if they're necessary or not, but I like having them to wipe up condensation (just a personal thing, I hate it being there, most of you don't care, I get it) and to write stuff down on it.
Wonder if Pasty still uses them?

When I made my last batch of plates, I also used them to wipe away the condensation and I must say it worked pretty well! Thanks
I struggle to see inside even more if i do not wipe away the condensation.

When I first started doing this tek I never did the paper towels either. But they keep the filter drier, they also are great to write on rather than dicking around with tape, and when I got to clean em out, I use them to pull the agar disk right out while wiping the round.
Its actually impossible to not recycle in my town. Also nothing reaches the landfill. Plus given my job as a planet fucker the waste generated is laughable to me. I see far more damage and waste every day on a scale that staggers me

I hope this is the right thread to ask this in!
These are some pe grains that are just terribly covered in bacteria, and god knows what else, it managed to colonize almost all the grains, but the top layer
My question is, if I were to scrape one piece of grain, the cleanest out of all of them (and put to a new plate of agar), would that be limiting the genetics, or do I need to scrape from several grains?

I think that if you scrape from a grain you're still going to have a lot of genetics in it. It would be about like taking a first transfer from agar.
Were it me, I'd take scrapings from several grains into several different dishes just to pad the chances of getting a good growing clean culture. Then I'd do at least one transfer from the best looking grain-scrape inoculated plates just to be sure there's no bacteria present.

yeah, I figured on doing about three plates, I just was making sure I was not limiting the genes to much by taking the scrapings off of just one grain, I guess it won't hurt anything, but ALL of the other grains have metobolites all over them, believe it or not, cause it doesn't a appear that way in the pic, very shitty pic!

Woke up today and my PR is doing pullups?
Wtf happened? I noted that that side had a slightly off color, is this a reaction to bacteria? It LIFTED the whole agar. Jesus man.
