I remember the first time I found Candycap mushrooms was when I was tying my shoe, a rich maple smell wafted to me while kneeling and I saw maybe a half of a pound crop all around me.

After reading this I wonder how many other things on microscale plants and fungi can do to thrive, that we even don't know about. Mushrooms basically create microclimate to move spores:havesomescience:.

I know this is true because it can account for huge (and lovely) deposits on spores on top of the caps where there are normally no air currents.

Beat me to it. I've often wondered how spores could end up on top of the cap.

Cool bit of info there, Maynard. Thanks for posting.

Queen of Kings: Good seeing you again. How's the hunting way down south?

Sunny and unseasonably dry, with periodic downpours of armillaria and russula brevipes.  :frown:  Maybe see you at the fungus fair in Nevada City?

Yeah, lot's of those up here, too. Still finding some interesting one's, though. Check out this Lactarius I found yesterday.

I'm going to try to make the Nevada City trip. I really want to go to SOMA camp but don't think I'm going to be able to make that one. Hopefully Alan's mushroom photography talk will end up on video.

In the picture? For sure. But the article wasn't talking about artificial conditions, I don't think.

I think it's cool that there might be more to spore dispersal than a stroke of luck in taking advantage of air currents. They might have learned to manipulate it.
