Car, anyone?

Hey Everybody
Been a while since i've been here it seems. Hope everyone is well.
So i'm wondering who here has really researched a car, and gotten comparable results, instead of just buying on a whim like i did the first time. I'm not saying i got a bad car, i just never had anything to compare it to.
I've already go to couple sites i'm looking into about researching cars, but anything else you guys can think of would rock. Also any lists of reputable and honest (if a such a thing exists lol) list of dealerships or ways to find that would be great. Thanks fellas
By the way i'm thinking of looking into a 2004 or 2003 Toyota or Honda, i figure ten years old if i can find a good one and take of it should last a while, right?

You bought a car without researching it? What kind of car?
I always research the HELL out of any high dollar items I buy.
This here is my new baby. My last car was a 2005 VW GLI and I was hooked and knew I wanted another one. 2013.5 model, Autobahn edition.. fully loaded. No regrets whatsoever, fucking love it.
bone stock on day 1. I've already started modding it.. not taken any new pics yet

Its far easier to figure out the top 3-5 specific cars you want then research them individually.
I can tell you this the top three best life pan, running, repairability I.e. cost of parts and labor, and resell value are (or was like five years ago) Toyota then Honda and then Nissan.
Does that help?

Oh I guess is misread your post before the edit. You are looking to do some research and haven't bought one yet.
I'm a member of VWvortex which has tons of resources and a lot of knowledgeable folks. That's a good place to start... find a dedicated car forum for the particular manufacturer you are looking at.
When buying used, lookup the VIN online. Ask for any records of regular maintenance or any accidents it was in.. any good original car owners will keep all the documentation. An informed consumer with a smartphone is a used car dealer's worst nightmare Also don't make any snap decisions. Find something you like, inspect thoroughly, check for RUST.. take a bunch of pics.. and shop around. Ask people on the car forum. Look at several different cars in different places, find the best deal you can get. Then when you do find the one you want.. haggle them down. The sticker price is always way jacked up, and they have a lot of wiggle room.

Yeah but this was years ago when i was dumb and stupid; still young but trying to learn.
It was a 97 Camry which ended up having multiple issues because I went a crappy place to boot, try and save money.

Not always.. but you usually get what you pay for, for the most part. With cars though it can be tricky. But if a car is $500, you gotta wonder what is wrong with it that they aren't telling you. Although every once in a while you may find a crazy good deal.. it's rare. If they don't have any documentation of previous maintenance or repairs, etc.. be very wary. You may save a little bit right out the gate by buying a really cheap car.. but if you have to constantly repair it and fix broken things every week, then it becomes more of a money sink and major headache than anything. Just research very thoroughly before making any decisions. Inspect the car very thoroughly and take pics.
If you live in an area that gets snow... check for rust especially underneath.
If you don't know much about cars.. take many pics (especially of the engine, undercarriage, etc) and post them on the car forum asking opinions, second opinions are always good.

I found a 97 Buick LeSabre with 36,000 original miles driven by an 80 year old lady and kept in the garage, payed 4,400 cash and he gave me 500 for an old minivan I had. I was looking for the LeSabre in particular too! This car get s 30-32 miles per on the highway (19 city though), it's not flashy but the repairs will always be reasonable and the 3.8 litre V6 it has seems to be one of the best engines ever made. I had 2 mechanics try to buy it from me when I took it in to get looked over. I love this car! Rides like a dream.

It seems that all the "best car deals ever" stories that I hear.. are always from people buying cars from old people. They tend to take very good care of them and don't put on a lot of miles. You can find some practically mint condition cars from some old grandpa that had it sitting in his garage for 30 years. My grandpa is one of those people, he's got like 5 classic cars sitting in his garage and puts on maybe 5 miles a year and treats them like a baby. The hard part is getting them to sell it. But usually grandma is easier
