who here doesn't have a TV?
    #19207158 - 11/30/13 01:28 AM (10 years, 2 months ago)

i have been living without a TV for about a year and a half now, i feel like if i stayed home alone most of the time it would make a little sense to have some TV to keep me somewhat sane.

what do you guys think? i'm sick of specifically picking what i want to watch.

I haven't had Tv for over 3 years now and I like it that way.  I find I spend more time on more rewarding hobbies, creative persuits, and outdoor activities.

i feel like the internet is losing its charm and i might as well get a TV, some cable so i can be spoonfed some programs, and a used game console so i can do other things with my time rather than spend my whole day in my apartment with nothing but my laptop (and mushroom grow but that takes forever)

I watch it sometimes for very short periods of time and from what I've seen, it's mostly trashy ignorant reality shows anymore. Screw that.

I haven't owned a tv since I left NH about four years ago.
But I do watch constant shit on my laptop.

I'm renting a bedroom that has a living room kind of attached that I am the only one who can access it since I have a private entree and it has a tv that must be around a 50 inch nice flat screen with fully loaded satellite. Iused it the first night iI got here two months ago for two hours and that was to watch the finale of breaking bad.

Kind of wreird that I had never seen breaking bad on cable before that finale.

O and since that show I haven't turned that the again.

:weird yea I know

I live in a country where the biggest television channels are public broadcast. They are funded by television licence fees which are mandatory if you own a television set, regardless of whether you watch public broadcast or not. I think the BBC does something similar.

Our license fee pays for the BBC, there's no commercials and they make shows like Planet Earth and Top Gear. A lot of people think it's good value for money.
You are allowed a TV but you're not allowed to watch live broadcasts without paying a fee. They'll come round if you don't have a license.

The BBC has a liberal bias, they're rebel supporters in Syria, they're pro EU, pro immigration, and they're selective about what news they report. They won't report the full extent of GCHQ snooping for example.

There's a split between people who support the BBC and those that don't with strong opinions on both sides.

A TV will make you less sane. I don't have one either,  I threw mine away about 3 years ago. It takes a year or a little longer to wake up from the TV induced coma. But if I do want to watch something special or a movie I simply download it and watch it on the computer. I'm actually a much happier person without a TV. You should turn off the radio too, if you have one. If you tune out for a year or two when you tune back in you realize that you've been talked to like a kindergardner and how manipulated you were. Radio will seem like mindless chatter that you won't want to listen to. In short tuning out takes you off the propaganda control grid and you learn how to form your own opinons and thoughts. People who watch TV and listen to raddio do nothing but parrot back what they hear and believe the rediculous lies and propaganda they are exposed to. Better to rid yourself of that rubbish for good.

I usually torrent tv shows I want to watch or use netflix. I do have a couple of digital tv tuners for the computer but they're not hooked up. We have two CRT TVs but neither is set up to pick up broadcasts, one's hooked up to the Wii for Netflix and the other is a VCR for kids' movies. Everything else is computer monitors.

Digital OTA TV is pretty cool but I think the antenna needs to be pretty high in my location to get good reception.

I do not have a tv.  I got rid of mine when I moved 2 years ago.  I was trying to hook the digital converter box into the digital antenna and the dvd player.  I realized I was trying to splice all these cables into a tv with fake wood panels on the sides.  I said screw it and threw it into the dump.

Last month I was at a bonfire.  I happened to say 'I do not have a TV' after for the 10th time somebody started a sentence with 'Man, did you see #$%@#$%#@$%@#$%#$% last night, or last week, or whatever'......One guy was so shocked and confused that he tried to take up a collection for my wife and I.

My wife's grandmother wants to get us a TV because she feels bad that we do not have one.  We told her we could get more use out of a king bed.

It confuses me when people assume I am less fortunate or think I am above other people because I do not have a TV.  I would rather spend money on beer brewing equipment or travel than to sit in my home.  I would rather identify birds and rocks than to know the stats some person has on a sport team.....

I have a TV in just about every room.

A 32" flat panel in the living room, a 27" crt in the.. well room where my computer is (family room?) and one in the bed room.

Only the living room TV is hooked up to an antenna so I can watch local news in the morning and evening. Other than that it streams TV shows over the internet and is hooked up to a Wii and xbox360. The other one is hooked up to a PS2 whith a steering wheel so I can drive drunk on Gran Tourismo 3 and 4 and the one in the bedroom is hooked up to a computer so i can go to sleep watching Simpsons, Seinfeld, South Park, Family guy and other show, playing on random.

When the big TV sales happen in a couple months I will probably buy a bigger TV for the living room and put the 32" one in the bedroom hooked up to a rasberry pi instead of my noisy computer on the other side of the wall.

My girlfriend and I don't own a TV, and I'm proud of it.  My roommate has one in the living room of our house, and I'll admit to watching some trashy shows now and then while drunk, but in general TV's an utter waste of time IMO.  I'd much rather catch good television series after they've been aired and I can torrent them in their entirety to watch on my computer, without being subjected to mindless commercials or being tempted to channel surf while bored and settle on some mindless programming that will only lower my IQ in the long run.  :cool2:

What if I have gone through a similar no TV no radio phase and now I am bored as fuck and wish to watch TV knowing and identifying parts that it is propaganda for laughs? Also I'm looking to put on some dumbass shows and just be on my computer with the TV on looking for interesting parts rather than spend time watching.

Wow, people still use TVs? I've given up on that, the internet has everything if not more than what TV has to offer, and it's expensive for students.

There's generation after generation are going to be watching less and less TV.

Anyway, I obviously don't own a TV. I do have a projector though, that I can handily plug into any device with a monitor. Works great and it's cheaper.

There's no getting out of this one bro.  The commercials will program useless noise into your mind at a subconscious level.  You'll hate yourself later for having to meditate yourself back to reality.  Or you may never know, finally laying on your deathbed wondering why you never put more effort into living life to the fullest.  Your choice son.

I have a TV, but I only watch about 6 hours of it per week.  3 hours for the Vikings, 1 hour for the Walking dead, and maybe a couple hours of Basketball.

I play a shit ton of BF4 though, and stream stuff from my laptop.

I always find the phrase, "no TV" a strange one. It must be the generational gap between only Cable, Satellite, or Antenna based TV, to a mix of downloading shows over the internet, and then the ability to stream them.

I guess the discussion always makes me laugh when people say, "I don't watch TV." Really, so you haven't watched Breaking Bad? "Oh no, I love that show, I downloaded/streamed it online."

So it seems to really come down to what you watch and if and when you watch it does it include commercials.

Of course, there are those that just don't, but I find them weird.

If you have a laptop, or desktop and you watch shows online, you are watching TV.

You can do that and you will realize everything!!!

Too much and you will be sucked back into the control grid.

Try it and you'll see. Watch a few shows or news programs. Now that you haven't been exposed to it you will instantly realize how its intended to distract and control you rather than to inform or entertain. You'll see seemingly intelligent people you know acting like a parrot and repeating almost word for word as if its their own thoughts what you saw on the box the day before or hours before and you will know they are nothing but propagandized zombies.

I'd advise caution though because if you expose yourself to much of the TV you yourself will get sucked back in and lose yourself in it like 99% or the other people have.

I have a TV, but we don't have cable or anything. I just use it for Netflix and video games. We have the internet and that's it.  I've been using Netflix for free for several months as well.

I don't miss television, never watched it much to begin with. Just mindless shit that wastes your fucking time.

TVs are a must. Cable is a must not. You must have a TV to watch amazing movies in HD on a life sized screen. It's just awesome. Cable sucks with the exception of a good documentary or the occasional comedy. If things weren't so expensive then we could just visit those places and events but its not cheap. Still I'd have a big TV just for movie nights with a cute girl or something.
