Glass instead of monotub lid?

This may be a silly question but I figured I'd ask it anyway. I have my monotub prepped for my first bulk grow but I seem to missing the lid. I do, however, have a nice, clean sheet of glass that's just collecting dust. Any disadvantages to just placing this on top of the tub rather than a flimsy plastic one? The glass is obviously heavier so it would seal the gap between the tub and the "lid" more so than the loose fitting plastic lids that come with them. My only concern is reflection of the grow light and not being able to drill a few holes in the top for added FAE. FAE holes in the sides should be plenty, yes?

You may get more condensation from it than plastic, the thermal conductivity of glass is about five times higher than plastic. If it means more condensation it could mean you will have pooling water on the surface of your substrate because it will drip off of the lid, you might get craters all over the surface of your mycelium.

Very valid point. Couldn't I wipe and fan periodically to cut down on this?

I wipe my lids as needed, I never fan unless there is a need to.

So do you think periodic wiping would keep things in check? I think I'm going to give it a go and if things get too messy I'll just run out and buy another lid; no big deal. I've never heard of anyone using a glass lid and thought it'd be neat to try something different.

Just make sure it is laying nice and flat on the tub or it may introduce constant fresh air while colonizing.

Absolutely. The sheet of glass is roughly 5 inches wider on each side in comparison to the tub itself. I had planned on placing weights on all four sides to ensure a tight seal. I'm assuming this will provide an even tighter seal as opposed to the plastic lids provided when you purchase the bin; those surely allow trace amounts of air in seeing as how they aren't air tight.

Why?
Have you read a single tek that says to do that?
The imperfect lid will provide the needed GE.....there is no need to seal a colonizing monotub.

Well, I've never read a tek that stated that explicitly. I always thought the 4 FAE holes were sufficient but I suppose I was wrong. Sorry.

What he is trying to say is that the imperfect lid allows for GE (gas exchange) which is needed during colonization.
After fully colonized you take the tape off the holes and stuff with polyester stuffing to allow for FAE (fresh air exchange).
Some tubs have bowed lids and fit horribly... avoid purchasing one
I noticed once that one of my lids had 4-5" dry spots around the seal of the lid and did put "some" weight on it, even during fruiting because without the weight I was getting too much evaporation off the surface of the sub too quickly.

Well, I have an opaque lid for this tub, couldn't I just place that on it for colonization and place the tub in a trash bag per the damion5050 coir tek? Or I could just cut out some of the lid and replace with plexiglas.

Do not put it in a trash bag, let it get indirect light during colonization.
It used to be thought that light would cause early pinning, it is not true and is worse to leave it in total darkness, not only that but it keeps you from knowing when to wipe the condensation off the lid.
When you wipe the condensation off the lid right before it starts to drop, just lift the lid only as much as needed to get your arm into it, use the most absorbent thing you have and make sure to have 2 pieces of it so you can get the remainder that gets left behind.

Ok, so it looks like I'll have to plexiglas this opaque lid and just do it that way then. By the way, thanks for the info and being so patient. I know how difficult it must be explaining the same shit over and over again but it's how noobs can prevent botching a grow so it's much appreciated.

In my personal experience a loose fitting lid always worked better for me than a tight lid it provides that little extra FAE when its needed.
