changed my own brakes, klunking sound
    #19205301 - 11/29/13 03:28 PM (10 years, 2 months ago)

alright... so a little while ago i changed rotors and pads. now, (and this has been going on ever since i did my rotors and pads the first time myself a year or two ago) there is a klunking sound when applying the brakes in one direction, and the klunk doesnt happen again till i apply my brakes moving in the alternate direction...

i checked the mounts, they are fine and tight. i checked calipers, they are working properly (though i hear a different sound when i apply them from the caliper hitting the back of the pad, not too worried about that).

ive google searched the shit out of this and it seems to happen on many cars, not just my little mitsu, porsche, mazda they all have the ability to have this weird klunking sound.

the sound only comes from the right side of my car too... where i hit a curb and bent my rim (fixed) and the struts and mounts in the front have both been fixed as well.

what could this possibly be? i read a lot where people were having it checked out and they were coming back saying that the pads were shifting in the housing, but i dont understand how that would happen mostly on one side of the vehicle. any thoughts on this matter?

would like to note, there is also some rattling going over bumps on the right side of the vehicle, but i dont understand that either since i just changed out the struts and mounts.

My first guess, one of the two caliper bolts is gone and it flops around. ??

i've heard wheel bearings go before, that's something you hear all the time when driving and can be speed dependant.

again, checked the caliper mounts - they are tight.

cv joint - mayyyybe? i was under the impression they only go bad when the boots go bad... in which case there are no tears in the boot.

Yes, she is a FWD car.

I am wondering if the sounds from the right have anything to do with the impact i had a couple years ago since that seems to be when i remember starting to hear it? that's vague though.

Ball joint?  Check the wear pattern on the tire.

Does the sound get worse when you hit something on the right, or when you apply the brakes?

tires are new... hard to check the wear pattern however....

the car pulls to the right, even after being aligned (though the condition is much less prominentafter an alignment).

steering wheel is offset to the left, and even after alignment it has a tendency to go back to this way, pulling to the right... which over time gets worse.

the klunking sound does not get worse when i hit a bump in the road (this however illicits a different sound, more of a rattling sound)

the klunking sound happens only under these conditions: when foot is on the brake, and i put the car in to reverse to back out of a drive way or a parking space, and will not occur again till i put my foot on the brake and put the car in drive and wont happen again till i go back into reverse.

If the ball joint is bad, then the impact i had that bent the right rim would have probably caused this, i however doubt it is the root of the klunking sound (feel free to correct me), but perhaps the rattling sound?

Idk... does you e-brake work? one of the springs could've broken/slipped off and the e-brake shoe could just be flopping around in the drum...

You sound right, probably something else.  This is <2min vid on ball joint diagnosis if you can get it up on a jack:

My tires would screech a little bit on small slow turns before I did mine, plus the characteristic uneven wear patters, otherwise a clunking noise especially on bumps and turns.

ebrake drums are in the back.

to the poster above, this is what a cv joint sounds like when it goes:

notice that the knocking speeds up with the acceleration of the car. my car does not do this, the sounds are also nowhere nearly as loud.

This is a bad ball joint:

my car doesn't make all those crazy creaking noises at all.

WTF IS IT

So, when your foot is already on the brake you get the "klunk" when you shift into gear? You sure it's not coming from the tranny?

BOOM, found the rattling sound culprit sound, to a T:

Sway bar link is going/gone. impact on the right wheel bub would have caused this too if there was enough force to dent my rim in.

Shouldn't be that hard of a fix... I guess my only problem now is still the clunking when reversing/driving - applying the brakes once.

IF it is in fact the pads shifting in the housing, how the hell do i get them to stop doing that??

on another note, there was this little metal clip that i didn't put in, and i've never put it in when changing pads/rotors. there were two of these little metal clips, and they differ from the actualy mounting clips (there are four of those and they clip on to the caliper mounts where the pads connect, top and bottom both sides of the rotor)

four clips:

the clips i never use:

note: disregarding the bolts and the clip washers, those little black bent clips are pretty much the same shape as the ones used on my mitsubishi

--so what do they go to? could THEY be the culprit of the kluking sounds causing my pads to shift??

No, the transmission was just rebuilt - i have another issue with that... the temp sensor on the tranny might be bad... and if thats the case, im pretty pissed at the mechanic who charged me 1600 to rebuild the damn thing and not replace that part.

ok so let me walk you through hearing this sound.

>>get in car.
>>turn over key
>>disengage parking/e-brake
>>press on brake pedal to be ready to put automatic transmission into gear
>>put in reverse gear
>>car moving backwards
>> hit brake pedal to slow and get ready to put into Drive
>>KLUNK
>>put transmission into drive
>>car moving forward
>>have to brake, apply brakes
>>KLUNK
>>for the rest of the trip, hear no more klunks, accept when i go to reverse and apply brakes at that time.

I've had a control arm bushing going bad once, tried to change everything, still had a clunk, finally found it. Never had a sway bar link clunk in my life, even with them being really bad.

Ball joints will clunk too. Eventually you will find what's loose.

What kind of vehicle?

I was kind of thinking control arm bushing as well. The accident could have caused it as too.

mitsubishi lancer ES.

well, this is what's happening, though that sound is more of a tap/klick? it doesn't sound like a deep 'klunk' though the camera mic is poor quality, and they are outside the vehicle

Will sound like a short fast clunk. Doing what he's doing, just going forward, little gas, hard brake, then clunks, keep doing that, and if it keeps clunking. That is your problem.

I spent 3 weekends and 400 bucks replacing everything in the front end of one of my cars until I found it. Since the bushing is pressed fitted in, usually have to replace the control arm. Junk yard time. New just costs too much, unless it's a known issue with that car.
