Seeing as it's a SAB build day

I just taped a propane torch with a ignition button to the side of my SAB so that all I have to do is press a button and get instant, adjustable on the fly flame. I have it right next to the corner so that I have minimal travel after I heat a scalpel or syringe to the hand hole.

I don't know what the button thingys cost but since I do plumbing work on the side it didn't cost me a thing.

That's an amazing idea! I've always thought of putting my alcohol lamp inside my SAB (after cleanning it really well, of course) because a biologist friend said that it actually helps to keep the inside of the box cleaner. I'm afraid it may heat the plastic too much and make a hole or something, so I've never tried it yet. However, the extra benefit of being able to flame sterilize needles and scalpels sounds awesome. Let us know hot it all works out when you have to chance to actually test it workign! I'd be very curious to know how well it works.

A flame inside a SAB defeats the purpose of the STILL AIR in the box. Any flame generates air currents that is why we sterilize to red hot so that if anything falls on it while bringing it in to your SAB its not an issue. Also a bunch of flammable vapors in an enclosed plastic or cardboard box with an open flame inside. Yea nothing will go wrong there.

Very good point. How about the alcohol lamp? a small one, in a big enough SAB... This friend told me that the flame actually helps to keep the inside cleaner, but I guess you guys have more field experience with mushrooms and not some theoretical lab thing. Has anyone heard of that?

I've used it that way for a year now and it works out amazingly well. I just knocked up 8 jars from agar wedges. Once you get your rhythm down, it goes relatively quick.

Who's talking about any open flame inside the box? You're kidding, right?
Another addition that I forgot about. I couldn't see as well as I'd like so I put a crystal clear window on the box.

I cracked it a short while ago. It's easily replaceable.

indeed. there was just a thread about that, it actually appalls me how little care some people take to avoid their SAB going up in flames...

As soon as I can get rid of my Parkinson Disease it will get better.
I don't use brown rice so I feel good about that one.
I call it lived in, no OCD here, just Parkinson, Morphine, and Oxycodone.
I do the best I can. At least my cognizant abilities are above par.

Your friend is probably comingling the concept of working under a bunsen burner in open air to create a small but sterile workspace and the concept of working inside of a SAB. However, the two concepts are mutually exclusive.

A bunsen burner does not create a sterile workspace....they do that in labs where they grow cultures for only a few days....which is not enough time for nasties to show up...
We save our cultures for much longer than that....so our workspace must be a lot cleaner than in a lab.....meaning sterile OR still air.....not something in between like a flame in open air..

Just curious can you link me to a source that the bunsen burner technique isn't sterile? Either way it's probably what Honguista's friend meant.

RogerRabbit said: I was in a microbiology lab yesterday to get several septic samples tested for the county conservation district. They NEVER and I must repeat for you NEVER keep cultures longer than 48 hours. This is why they can get away with using less than sterile technique, such as a Bunsen burner. Contaminant spores simply do not have time to germinate and grow before the petri dish is discarded.
In mycology we keep the same cultures alive for 30 years or more. In fact, my best Shiitake strain is over 30 years old, and my Oyster strain which is one of the best performing strains in the world is over 10 years old. This requires 100% sterile procedure, which is why we wear surgical gowns, gloves, masks, hairnets, and run laminar flow hoods, usually in a positive pressure lab, charged by HEPA filtered intake.
Of course, you've had all this explained to you many times before. . . RR

Well, not that RR doesn't know what he is talking about most of the time, but I was looking for something a little more scholarly, you know, something you'd list as a source in the bibliography of a college essay?

How flammable is soapy water? With the torch taped OUTSIDE of the box, where's the danger?
Somebody needs some glasses. You guys crack me up.
