presto 23 qt pressure cooker
    #19202570 - 11/28/13 08:53 PM (10 years, 2 months ago)

Alright, I need to sterilize some Alder wood chips in my Presto 23 qt pressure cooker @ 15psi for 90 minutes so I can inoculate them with PF Tech jars of P. Azurescens #2 mycelium. The pressure cooker has a weighted rocker steam release valve that releases above 15 psi and vents, causing water to over boil and make a mess. Is there any way I can increase the weight on the rocker to release steam at 20psi or above to prevent this??

What do you have the chips in? Jars? Bags?

Using that PC, the water level should be 1''-2'' from the bottom, or about 1/4 of the height of a quart jar.

dont mod your PCer..are you using bags or jars for the wood chips?..
if not,of course its gunna boiling over..
your heat should be turned down so the weight wobbles only a couple times per minute or so..

You sure you don't want your wood chips pasteurized rather than sterilized?

i use 1 cup of water for every hour of sterilization. wood chips take like 3 hours , so you wouldnt need more then like 4 cups of water..

when pcing that long , your bags will often melt. so I use a wet burlap sack to place the bag on and wrap around it.

Sounds like you're just leaving your PC on high the whole time.

If you've ran it dry, it's trash.

If you haven't ran it dry (IE every time you've opened it there's been at least some standing water left, even a little bit) then you should read the instructions for your PC.

36fuckin5 has a few good points.

You vent the steam out for ten minutes then cover with a rocker and operate at 15 psi.
At that pressure no way should you have a boil over condition.
You probably are going too hot.
Don't boil dry either, it will ruin your pc.

There are small marks cast into the inside wall of that model pressure cooker.
The lowest one will suffice for a minimum water mark.

Seriously, read your instruction sheet. http://www.gopresto.com/downloads/instructions/01781.pdf
And read a few posts about pressure cooking in general and about azure spawn.

Good luck.

Thanx dude! I haven't got the pressure cooker yet, it just said something about the boil over with rocker type vents making a mess of spawn inside the cooker ("Psilocybin Mushroom Handbook--Easy Indoor and Outdoor Cultivation", p.34, 1st paragraph). Anyway, I think I'll be fine. I do have another question for you though. I have never grown Azures, but have done my research and believe I can succeed. I live in central NC, so I think the climate is good (I'm on the border of Zones 6 and 7). I have 6 grain jars that I inoculated (in a sterile environment) with a nice fat P. Azurescens #2 spore syringe 2 days ago. After the jars are colonized, I plan to transfer the spawn to 6 bags containing 3.5 lbs sterilized (15psi/90 min) alder wood chips. When these are colonized, I plan on using them to spawn an unsterilized outside bed (6"x6"x10") of 30 lb oak chips, 20 lbs alder chips, and 20 lbs of maple sawdust (all soaked, of course) after the last frost this spring. They say to keep it covered with cardboard and watered (especially in the hot summer) till the temps drop to about 65 for a few days (late Sept). Then uncover it and add a thin casing layer of pure sphagnum moss with a couple handfuls of  grass seed. Keep casing wet for high humidity, and I should get some fruit when temps drop to 45. Then flushes every week or 2 till winter. Then cover it up for cold temps till spring, add a little more substrate, and start all over again. Does this sound like a decent plan to you? Like I said, I just inoculated the jars with spores 2 days ago, so any suggestions would be welcome! Thanxx!!

I have the presto 16qt, I'll certainly be checking on this thread for more information on how to correctly use it...  I usually keep the water level pretty low, scared myself a little on the last batch of jars I did, barely any water left at the end, but there was definitely a little bit so it didn't boil dry.  what exactly do you guys consider the proper amount of rocking?  mine starts to get annoying around 10-12psi and rocks really hard at 15psi.  a bit of water/steam comes out of that part (? sorry, intoxicated) throughout the process but I wouldn't consider it anything close to a mess...?  then again, I am not working with wood chips...  if you already have your spawn, the suggestion to pasteurize seems good, but again I have little experience, so I too will listen to the more experienced members on this topic...  regardless, best of luck. from what I have seen myself and also read, presto's seem to work pretty goddamn well for how cheap they are

I have the same cooker and to keep it at 15 PSI you cannot put the gas so low that the weight only wobbles a few times a minute.
To keep it at 15 PSI it more sounds like a steam engine.
I bet this differs a lot between the different brands. Even though it sounds like a steam engine, the puffs of steam lost are small enough not to cook it dry within a few hours.
When I found the 15psi sweet spot on the gas stove, I put a mark on the gas valve. So every time I use it now, I put it to that mark immediately.
When the water boils, after 10 minutes of steam venting I put the weight on there and let it go to 15 PSI, after which I set my alarm clock to the desired time.

The presto very easily starts spewing water of out of the "air vent" or "cover lock". Whatever it's called. I have overfilled a few times and had this problem. It spews boiling water not steam, a little messy if you have other things on the stove. I also don't generally wait for the water to heat up to put the rocker on, so that may be part of my problem. But if the water level is right it doesn't matter.

Juicin if you use the lowest fill line and vent the steam out first you shouldn't get boil over.
The venting is required or you are pressurizing air and not steam which has a higher kinetic energy.

To OP
The most recommended path for azures is agar - supplemented sawdust - wood chips - chip bed.
That way you can isolate away from contaminants on agar.
That being said I did start straight from a syringe once.
I started some quart jars mixed 50/50 rye grain and fresh soaked ash chips.
I allowed them to become colonized for a while.
Then I separated out the colonized grains and spawned the chips to a bed of fresh maple chips.
That colonized without any grain to attract rodents.
It wasn't the correct way but it made an established bed.

Good luck, document your trials and I'm sure others will be quite helpful.

Yea that was poor wording, I meant as long as the water is low enough no matter what you do it won't make a mess.

Use less water and turn the heat down when it get's to 15 psi. You only need a little heat to maintain 15 psi, probably around the medium - medium low setting.

If the temperature starts to drop too much turn the stove back up and when it hits 15 psi again turn it back down. Once the PC is warm it should hold at just below 15 psi on medium setting.

It will touch 15 PSI on my stove, just below it does not matter that much if you look at a temp/pressure curve of steam.

well here's a question for you guys...  it appears that the air vent/cover lock on mine has been damaged, I imagine it's just a gasket for the seal or something that must have broke?  anyways, my cooker is maintaining around 12psi with the leak.  seeing as you don't need a PC for brf jars, would pressure cooking at 12psi work for brf?  I would imagine it would still be better than basic steam sterilizing...  got a few extra jars lying around and was looking to get them going in a somewhat timely manner.  I know patience is key but I figured I'd ask
