So, me and my buddies went and picked some cubes yesterday (I know they're small, but my buddy is moving, so we just wanted to trip, no hate please). Anyways, check it out

Sweet. I always have wanted to find a mushroom in a patty.
Started when I was 12. I heard about mushrooms growing from cow shit so, I went to a field in the fall around September in Sandy Utah looking for mushrooms in patties.
Was not going to eat anything just really wanted to see it.
Of course I found nothing.
Hope you had fun with your friend who is leaving.

Haha. I still know people who claimed they used to pick mushrooms from the cow patties here in central California. When I asked which species it was and how they knew their response was, "There's only one kind that grows out there!"

Here in central Florida theres only one type that grows on patties, but theres another type that grows through the patties, not off of them.

As in to make the spores fall onto the shit so more mushrooms will grow? No, but my brother did. He's also the one who showed me the field.

- The way my brother described the field is like there was tons of mushrooms that used to grow there, but now theres just the occasional patch. I assume people didn't flick the mushrooms.

It has more to do with climate, available nutrients, and how many people are picking the field and how often. I have heard people having good luck by putting spores in the cow's water trough. I don't know exactly how they do this, but it might be worth investigating.

If the spores are still viable when they come out, wow, that would be brilliant. but they probably arent viable after going through a cows stomachs.

Well I don't know, I do remember somebody talking about finding viable spores in slug poop, so I could be wrong.

This hardly answers the question but, "Cows will produce 20-35 gallons of saliva a day" WTF!

Ruminent GI tracts are set up so as to keep many organisms alive so that they can digest the plant matter.
pH of 5.5-7.0 with temps as high as 40 C. Not a deadly temp. Not perfect though.
They also have an acid stomach too. So I dunno. I like that I am reading about cow GI tracts in my bathrobe. Better than going to work today.
Another cow link.

The fungus Pilobolus survives passage through ruminant and horse stomachs. On dung, it produces asexual fruiting bodies that fire spore packets directly towards the sun in the early morning, going a horizontal distance of up to 12 feet from the dung so that they land on clean grass and are more likely to be eaten by herbivores. Click through to the article; it has cool pictures and graphs.
I would expect spores that can survive herbivore digestion to need thicker walls than otherwise, and maybe some other protective features, but it's clearly possible.

most of the spore mass is spread because cattle eat the grass, which is covered in spores...
