Spore prints with AOL CDs

So, I heard you have a lot of those laying around. There's some fun things you can do with them in the wild wild world of mycology.
Things you need: 1 CD, Silver. 2 jars or drinking glasses Water, paper towels, gloves.
1. Grab a wide mouth jar or even a drinking glass and fill it with water.*
2. Put the CD on top of said container. 3. Go pick your prized monster from it's sleeping chamber. 4. Cut off a small amount from the base of the stem** 5. Insert stem through hole in CD. 6. Cover it with another jar Ala la Dub-tub style with the CD sandwiched in-between. 7. I'm sure everyone with experience with spore prints knows what to do now.
*Wet paper towels also work and can prop your baby off the CD so it will actually drop spores without touching the CD itself. **Just a personal preference for cleanliness, I've done it both ways.
Now you might be wondering why even bother to go through all that trouble? For one, it will still be alive and if you were ever picky about damaging a "trophy" you can keep the stem intact and dry it as is and still get a print. It also allows you to have the mushroom "drop" the spores upon a surface instead of having it to contact which might help avoid contamination. Finally one other perk, since it's still alive, you could actually continue growing it as is, I have done so to let bitty mushrooms grow a slight bit more in cupboards. I welcome anyone to try transplanting into a nutrient rich solution, or even a small jar and see how it works.

sounds like an easy way to get a dirty print.
We use foil since it's sterile off the roll or we PC something so that the print is on a sterile surface. I don't think a CD would do well in a sterilizer.

Taken from the web: Polycarbonate is FDA-approved for food use and is usually found in better quality, unbreakable, dishwasher-safe plastic tableware. It’s often clear or tinted, feels rigid, and appears glass-like.
CD's are made from Polycarbonate. I'm about 86% certain you could PC them and they would still be intact. The whole point of this kung fu technique was simply to do something different that may cater to someone else' specific needs. Foil and paper is not rigid enough to support the body of a mushroom. Foil bends, kinks, tears easily. Paper is porous. Wax paper is nasty. Also it allows you a pre-made set up that would avoid the mushroom ever contacting anything. I like plastics and it's cheap, even free. Just something different. Heck, you might even be able to save a contaminated mushroom's print with this method as long as you're careful.

Seems like the cd print/ silver that shows through the bottom will come off if pc'ed to sterilize..the silver you see on the bottom is actually printed on the top. Take a shitty cd you have and scrape the top..you will notice it becomes clear in that area when looking through the bottom side

Spore printing is not like cloning. A spore print from your prize fruit will be MS. So there is really no point in printing from it. Just use a different fruit. The genetic results will be the same.

AOL CD bit was a joke, a blast from the past, truly -- and this is just something short of a half baked idea, which works. Thought I'd share, yes I realize there are much more simpler ways that are better. It's just an idea that caters to certain applications. Only trying to give back to the commu after spending countless hours scouring over information... although I must admit a lot of it is contradictory and everyone has their opinions.
I mean cripes, if you want to become serious talk fluid dynamics, air density, o2/co2, flow, nutrients, sq ft space x pressure and all that which I'm still OCD over, or passionate... possibly insane? Either of the 3 or a combination. Not to bounce off topic at all, just saying.
PS: I hate verm.
