First Grow mycelium! FC Advice needed
    #19203920 - 11/29/13 08:04 AM (10 years, 2 months ago)

I just started my first grow and got something growing at my injection points. I injected 4cc in each of those accident jars, but have a look yourself. The whole container they are in smells sweet but not too unpleasent.

Little Update:
The 4cc jars are at about 70-80% colonized but smell sweet/earthy and will be finished in about 3-4 days.
The second batch (2cc jars) are at about 80%+ and will also be finished in some days. They don't smell strong and show nice rhizomorphic grow of some really strong mycelium.
The 1cc jars and last batch, is at about 40-50% also shows very strong growth and will take a week or a week and a half if growth continues like this.

I will let them consolidate for a week after finish, then roll and dunk. The big ones will be birthed in a bucket with a plastic bag over it. Soaked perlite on the bottom of course.
All the other ones will be fruited in my tiny growhouse, which has 3 1/2" holes on every side.

Anything against it? Grow is nice, no signs of contamination but the smell which gets weaker every day and isn't on the last batch.

So today I checked 4 quarter pints which are done colonizing. I'll let them consolidate another 5 days. My problem is my FC which is a tiny greenhouse, with a bottom that is wide enough to let a good amount of perlite in and 6 holes on the sides. (It's really tiny) It also has regulatable air holes on the top, which can be expanded up to 1.5" square inch each. So that's ok until this point I hope...
But when the cakes are put in the mushrooms would only have about 3" to grow upwards.... Is it a problem when they touche the FC? Will they just go on growing to the sides.
Substrain is cambodian... But I know genetics, genetics, genetics .

Too early to tell but I think you're good. Keep a nose on that smell though ...

It is my understanding that you do not need 4cc per jar. 1cc should be sufficient. But I am no expert.

Turned really bright white, but that smell rly thrills me because all my jars got it... But its really just sweet and could be the alc I used for sanitizing. It contains some aroma so probably its those molecules breaking down.
Those 4cc injections were accident, I had too much air in the syringe which pressed out tons of water.

Nah the smell is from bacteria.

Does that mean I have to toss all jars?
The smell was there before any growth.
And if it's bacteria where did I fail?
I mean even my newest jars had this smell when I first checked them 24 hrs after innoc and there was no myc. Now the newest which were injected tiny amounts of spore solution show some tiny little white fluffy mycgrowth under the innocpoint.
Would be sad to toss them all because of some sweetish smell...
I found fruity to kinda be the best description of that smell, ab bit like fresh sclerotia taste, but way more penetrant and annoying.

Are you sure the smell originates from all jars or is it from inside the container ? Means, you can have good jars mixed with contaminated jars. Try spotting the culprit(s) and isolate them. If all smell funny persistently, I'd have to agree with Kizzle.

One more question. What substrate mix are you using ? Some BRF brands have this kind of sweet odor after being cooked. I used one spanish brand a long time ago and I also thought it was contaminated. But it didn't make any sense because less than 24 hours had passed since sterilization. That begs another question: How did you sterilize those ?

The smell comes out of every single jar, I sniffed them today and packed them in freezing bags left open to allow GE.
I pc'ed for 90 minutes and my BRF does smell slightly sweet after sterilization but this smell is really intense, that now comes from the jars. It was in my last batch of jars after 24 hrs, when I checked them first.
I think about pcing a test jar to see if that smell develops without inoculation of anything.

The test jar is a good idea to understand the origin of the contamination. But anyway, if the smell persists then those jars are doomed.

I suppose that the print is the source (fsre), but I hope that the substrate just smells sweetish for obvious reasons .
I heard about fruiting bacteria contamned cakes, and I suppose that RR said many times that if a mushroom grows it won't contain anything harmful if only substrate was contamned. The threads I've got this from are old though...
I think I'll leave those cakes until colonized more and judge again smelling when they're done colonizing.

Sure, you can give it a week or so. But like I said, If the smell persists that means bacteria is getting hold of the substrate and mycellium won't have much chances to survive. Good luck man !

It was probably from your syringe. Usually if you get bacteria from insufficient sterilization it's Bacillus, because it's a particularly heat resistant bacteria, and that has a very different odor. I'm gotten that sweet smell though in cultures contaminated with other bacteria.

The smell from this jar got really weak and I'd like to know for my next try if this even is the right kind of mycelium. I hope so .

The jars with more mycelium smell slightly stronger.
I got them in open plastic bags (just to make sure that no dust falls into the holes) and the smell is really hard to find even when sniffing directly at the hole.
Could I mistake mushroom smell for bacteria contamination?

*Update* All jars show some really rhizomorphic sections, so I guess that proves that it's the right mycelium. I guess I will try to fruit the ones that don't smell strong, which only my big 4cc ones do.

How are they coming? Any odd shaped uncolonized areas?

Everythings fine! All is colonized only the spots to be colonized last still have 2 rhizomorphic hair dendrits fusing together. "Gap closing" I guess i was rly just overthinking the whole growing..
