Pipes freezing
    #19203708 - 11/29/13 06:10 AM (10 years, 2 months ago)

What temperature do you think I should leave my thermostat in order to prevent my apartment's pipes from freezing?

I was thinking 62, which usually keeps the house at 65.

Or maybe even 60?

Any input?

if you just trying to keep your pipes from freezing i would think you just need to keep the temp above 32F.

I had thought that I might turn my gauge down to 50, but I wonder if the piping runs under my place which makes them easier to freeze.

Leave a faucet on so it is dripping or barely running.  Running water doesn't tend to freeze as quickly as still water.

I seen it recommended to turn your thermostat at night and when leaving down to 15'C = 60'F, not just for your pipes but also to protect sensitive electrical appliances like your computer, stereo and TV which ought to be stored at room temperature.

55 is the standard for unoccupied houses around here. My buddy works for a house watching company and I just asked him about this a few days ago. If they know there is going to be an extremely cold period  they will go back around and check them and raise them up to 60 if the basements get too cold.

A bit beside the point but still relevant is always be sure to turn off your washer lines before leaving for a few days or longer. Especially if your washer isn't in the basement, lol.

Water freezes at 32° whether it's moving or not. Having the water moving slightly through the pipes will keep particularly cold areas from freezing as the supplied water will be slightly warmer.

And don't forget - the problem doesn't start until the pipes thaw.

I'm going to assume freezing temps aren't a concern for PEX lines? maybe for the unions though?

Apparently, they are resistant and probably won't fail the first time they freeze, but they are not immune to being compromised.
