What the hell is in my soil?
    #19199850 - 11/28/13 08:56 AM (10 years, 2 months ago)

They are small white bugs. They are very small because they can "stand" on the surface tension of the water. A quick search (google, shroomery, plant forums) has suggested mites of some sorts or springtails. I have elimiates springtales based on size. I cannot distinguish any features(legs head etc.) with the naked eye. They are white, not off white or butter. They are 1/3mm and can walk on water. They are not fungus gnat larvae, I have those but they look different.

Will they hurt my plants and how can I kill them?

Thanks in advance,

Cheers!

Sorry, no pics, too small to be more than white dots or even register at all...

Its probably just a kind of soil mite. Think spider mite but in the dirt rather then on leaves.

I think for the most part they are harmless. The problem comes when there is a ton of them and they run out of food in the soil to eat. then they start munching on root hairs

I seem to always get soil mites. Spent 2 years trying every different treatment for them and nothing worked, until I found diatomaceous earth. A little bit sprinkled on the edges of pots, along the outside bottom of them too. You can also put it directly on the top of your soil if you find food grade DE. Apply it a couple hours after watering because if it gets wet it will be rendered useless

It works by killing insects when they come in contact with it. Ive had people tell me it works 3 different ways, not sure which one is correct lol. but hey it works! just put it where ever the little bastards are going to be walking

Make sure you go the extra mile to find food grade DE. I cant speak highly enough about this stuff. Its solved every bug problem Ive ever had. One time I got a few cuttings that were infested with spider mites. Put a little on the soil and a little on the pot edges, and a very serious infestation was taken care of within 3 days

DE will prevent and kill bugs currently in the soil but id recommend a predatory nematoad soil drench. Wouldn't hurt to give a feeding of azamax or neem oil to build a defense against those pests with these plants and any more you bring into the mix. Hitting your plants with a myco rich compost tea will also help your plants fight that shit before it gets a hold.
