Updated Umbrella Logs

Here are my dogs Rye and Popcorn Straw logs and he used umbrella bags as his tubing. The logs are each about 18 inches or so and were dunked for 5 hours before birthing after then had begun to pin invitro. They are getting 4-6 hrs of light a day and an air pump in a water bottle for humidity. The logs where bith roughly 24 hours ago my dog tells me. What do you think?

My dog said they were PES Hawaiian. He's worked quite a bit with them and loves them just like T3 and South African. I'll keep you all updated with his new pictures. He's hoping a large pinset will take place in the next 48 hrs

If father of the log "Roger Rabbit" happen to see this, I'd like to know what he thought of my dogs set up for the logs. Also what he thought of pinning and no draping plastic over the log since its such a small chamber.

They look good, but it would be even better if they got light from above.

My dog appreciates it Hippie, he was wondering if he should also be draping a plastic over them or if the terranium was enough since it was small and holding high RH.

i'd use the plastic but sliced lenthwise into strips, just enough to trap some moisture and co2 but with plenty of air and room to grow out.

Ok, I'll pass along the news to my dog. He told me he is going to move the light some how to an overhead position because he hopes this will improve the pinset. I'm sure he'll be glad to hear his question answered so quickly!! Thanks again Hippie

My dog has sent me updated pictures. He's still waiting on the second log to really start pinning although there are a couple a one HUGE mushie. He's not sure when he's going to pick the first log but will send me more pictures and weight numbers when he can.

Nice work! Now, if you want that massive pinset you have to remember that a log is not a casing. A log is more of an overgrown pf cake in certain ways. It needs 100& humidity to make a really good pinset. My recomendation on your next try is to leave the original plastic tubing (umbrella covers? kewl!) on until you have at least half a dozen pins or so. Don't be in a hurry to peel the plastic tubing off. (birthing) Pins will form invitro just fine, due to air exchange from the holes you punched when you built the log. Once you birth it, keep it covered loosely with plastic that has been punched with holes for air exchange. The plastic should be actually touching the log. (I noticed you have somewhat of a tent. Let the plastic fall directly on top of the logs, just lift it up and move it around a few times a day for air exchange) Fruit bodies that form can easily push the plastic out of the way. That should maintain 100% humidity under the plastic due to the moisture that is within your log. Keep trying, experiment with new things, and keep all informed! (thanks to hip for pointing me to this thread by email)

What about birthing a couple of these into a PMP with no plastic on them? The humidity would not be a problem. It stays at 100% consistently in there.

That's what you want, in any form. 100% plus a good amount of air exchange...keep us posted on new things, that's how we all learn.

My dog picked his first log ( one on the right ) and he selected just a couple of his most prized fruits. He said he only took about half the fruits off today and has to wait a bit longer for the rest on that log. He wasn't sure on the wet weight but will soon post on completed dry weight. My dog always appreciates the support, thanks guys!
