Day 35:
Bad dudes: King Henry VIII of England
Christianity has not always been the shattered institution we all know and love today. Christianity originally started out as one single church and diverged from there as peoples opinions differed. With out a doubt, the biggest of these separations was the Protestant Reformation, and the creation of the Church of England by Henry VIII is just another such an example.

King Henry VIII was undoubtedly one of the most notorious womanizers of all time, if not the most. Although, at the start of his reign in April of 1509 at the age of 18, he appeared to be dutiful and noble. Before Henry's father had died, he had been working on a marital alliance between Spain and England. Henry's father planned to marry Henry's brother to Catherine of Aragon, the willow of the Spanish Prince Arthur, but plans fell through. When Henry took the throne he decided to keep good on his fathers promises and announced he would marry Catherine.

But by 1527, Henry found himself in a bind; his wife Catherine was getting older, loosing her looks, and had been unable to bear him a healthy male heir. Anne Boleyn, a young woman of the court, however was more then willing to attempt to bear Henry a son. To legally divorce Catherine and marry Anne Henry required a disposition from the Pope, but the Vatican refused. You see Henry had already obtained special permission from a previous Pope to marry Catherine. So Henry was now essentially asking the Church to claim they were wrong, and that by extension God was wrong. The single theme unifying all of the Middle Ages, is the power struggle between Secular and Temporal powers, and after 6 years of pressing the Church for an annulment, Henry decides to cut off all ties to the Vatican and form the Church of England. This move freed Henry from the Popes rules, and essentially handed over Henry both England's temporal as well as secular power.

In January of 1533, Henry married Anne, then in May the Church of England annulled his marriage with Catherine. Three years later in 1536 upon receiving the news that Catherine had died Henry ordered his people preform public displays of joy because she was dead. But by this time things were not going any better for Anne Boleyn then they had for Catherine. Anne, an intelligent and independent woman, was unwilling to adopt the submissive role that was expected of her. This was coupled with a miscarriage in 1935 was seen as a betrayal in Henrys eyes. Around this time we see multiple affairs from Henry. After two more miscarriages, 5 men including Anne's brother, as well as Anne are arrested in May 1533. The men are charged with treasonable adultery and having sexual relations to the queen, and Anne is charged with treasonable adultery and incest. Without any evidence, the men were executed on the 17th of May, and Anne on the 19th. The very day after the execution of Anne Boleyn Henry became engaged to Jane Seymour.

Only one year later Jane Seymour managed to give King Henry the son he had wanted for so long. On the 12th of October 1537 Prince Edward VI was born, and on October 24th Jane died due to complications from the pregnancy. Once again a widow Henry rushes off and marries Anne of Cleves only after looking at a portrait of her and hearing his courtiers description of the woman. In true hit it and quit it fashion, Henry gets his marriage with Anne annulled leaving no reason and executes Cromwell the man who suggested Anne to Henry. The day of the execution of Cromwell Henry is married to the young Catherine Howard, Anne Boleyn's cousin.

Henry is very thrilled with his new wife, a feeling his new fire apparently did not share. Because soon after her marriage to Henry Catherine begins having an affair with Thomas Culpeper one of her courtiers. Catherine also appointed Francis Dereham a man she had perviously had and affair and been unofficially engaged to before her marriage, as her secretary. She began having an affaire with Dereham too, and as was only a matter of time the court found out. luckily for Catherine, the court found out when Henry was away, and when Henry returned he would not believe the court. Even when presented with evidence of Catherine and Dereham's pervious affaire as well as engagement Henry would not hear it. It was not until Dereham had admitted it and exposed Catherine's affaire with Culpeper that Henry finally faced the facts. On February 13th 1542 Catherine as well as Dereham and Culpeper were all exacted.
Henrys final marriage was to Catherine Parr in 1543 who he remained married to until his death in 1547 at the age of 55. I find it really funny how his last two wives had the same as the first, and how his second and fourth wives were named Anne.

On this day in 1944 the Allies opened the port of Antwerp in the European theater of the war and the Germans responded by striking the area with V-1 and V-2 rockets. With the opening of Antwerp the Allies had a northern supply line to go with the beaches at Normandy. At this point the writing is on the wall. Germany and her allies are going to lose the war and everyone knows it.

Day 36:
Thanksgiving:
For those of us living in the United States the story of the Mayflower has been engrained into our young minds as a story of Americas humble and heroic beginnings. So to many of us will find the story of the Mayflower and her crew of 102 religious separatists seeking a new beginnings very familiar. Leaving in September of 1620, the Mayflower found itself in near the tip of cape cod 66 days later, although it would not be months later until the crew landed in Massachusetts Bay more commonly know as Plymouth.

During the first winter at Plymouth the colonists stayed aboard the Mayflower for shelter. The cramped quarters left the crew extremely susceptible to disease, exposer, and scurvy. Due to these bad conditions, only half of the Mayflowers crew lived to see the following spring.
In March, as conditions improved the crew moved ashore, there they were greeted by an Abenaki Indian who remarkably greeted them in English. A few days after he left, he returned with another Native American by the name of Squanto, a member of the Pawtuxet tribe. This Squanto fellow had sure been through a lot, kidnapped by and sold into slavery by and English sea captain, he later excepted his bondage a fled to London, where he eventually got a ride back to his homeland on an expedition. Squanto though the Pilgrims how to fish, cultivate corn, extract sap from maple trees as well as avoid poisonous native plants. With Squanto's help the Pilgrims forged a crucial alliance with the Wampanoag Indians which would last for over 50 years. Funny/sad thing is, this is one of literally a handful of examples of Native Americans and Europeans living harmoniously. He's a statue commemorating the dude.

By November of 1621 the colonists had harvested their first crop of corn successfully. To celebrate, William Bradford, Plymouths governor invited Massasoit the chief of the Wampanoag and his people to a three day festival. This historic banquet has been posthumously dubbed "the first Thanksgiving." Although there are no records of what the exact menu was of "the first Thanksgiving," we do have some clue what they ate. Records show Governor Brandford send men on "fowling" missions in preparation for the festival. We also know that the Wampanoag brought with them five deer, and that seal, swan, and lobster was also on the menu. But most Historians agree that the vast majority of the dishes prepared were Native America rather then European. This is due to the fact that the Pilgrims did not have the oven they did back home in Europe, and also due to the fact that records so that by Fall of 1621 the Colonists sugar supply had diminished. So many of the foods we consider nowadays to be classic Thanksgiving food, was not present at this three day feast.

In 1623 the Pilgrims held a second Thanksgiving celebrating the end of a drought, and starting a tradition among New England settlements. During the First Continental Congress it was designed that one or more days a year be Thanksgiving. In 1789 President George Washington issued the first national Thanksgiving, giving thanks at their separation from England. New York became the first state to adopt an annual Thanksgiving holiday in 1817. Many states would soon follow, although they would all celebrate it on different days. SARAh Josepha Hale, author of many things but perhaps most know for, "Mary Had a Little Lamb," is perhaps most responsible for a national Thanksgiving. For 36 years she publish countless editorials, as well as sent scores of letters to Political figures calling for a National Thanksgiving holiday. It was not Until 1863 that her call was heeded by President Abraham at the height of the Civil War as an attempt to “heal the wounds of the nation.”

Lincoln scheduled Thanksgiving to be the fourth Thursday of November, and until 1939 the holiday stayed that way. But in 1939 in the middle of the Great Depression President Franklin D. Roosevelt moved it to the third week of the month to spur retail sales. This plan was met with great opposition as was dubbed, "Franksgiving" by its dissenters. By 1941 F.D.R had already signed a bill into place changing thanksgiving back to the fourth Thursday of November.

On this day in 1943 the Allies launch Operation Crossbow - the order to attack German secret weapon installations is given absolute priority in the West. I guess the secret weapons weren't that secret after all. I further opine that someone forgot to tell the Germans.

On this day in 1941 German soldiers all over the Russian front got an untimely dose of reality - the temperature overnight dropped to -35C, freezing engines and jamming weapons while the troops suffered frostbite and pneumonia. This was followed by an incredibly strong counterattack in the Central Front (Moscow) by the famed Siberian Army about 40 miles south of Moscow and extending along a 200 mile front. This is as close to Moscow as the Germans were able to get.
