The effects of CO2 on Mushroom fruitbodies
    #19201749 - 11/28/13 05:42 PM (10 years, 2 months ago)

I have no history as a cultivator, but this is a photography thread to show the effects of gaseous environment on fruitbody development!

With access to fresh air cut off, the CO2 builds, and the fruitbodies elongate. Where the pileus would usually to form, more stipes emerge.

The resulting shape reminds me of a coral fungus, which it is not.

Seeking air, the mycelium climbs 4 inches of plastic and sneaks out the lid, without popping it.

Meeting oxygen, primordia form again, this time a true pileus is obvious.

The mushrooms take a classic Pleurotus ostreatus form in fresh air.

One Thing I forgot to mention, is the smell.

The gnarly C02 laden "mushrooms" have a much stronger smell. They smell like the fresh original spawn jars. The fresh air fruitbodies smell normal

Awesome progression of shots.  Amazing how it picks the best two and puts all the energy into them, aborting the rest, and how obvious that is in the last pic.  Cool stuff

Have some medicinal mushrooms and want to get the most out of them?  Try this double extraction method.

The abortions are likely because no humidity considerations were taken, these grew in open air. Very little care was given to this. The substrate was likely under hydrated days before the proper fruits appeared. This is not a tek. heh.
