using living mushroom to start mycelium growth in honey
    #1916249 - 09/14/03 06:24 PM (20 years, 6 months ago)

I want to use a live mushroom to start some mycelium in honey.
I need to know:
- howmuch honey
- water
- howmuch mushroom
- Should I pressure cook or not?

I will be using 1 pint widemouth jars and I have tons of micron magic filter disks. I have a glovebox as well with a fan for positive pressure.

1/4 honey is way too much. its more like 4%. 5-10 mls of honey shoulkd be plenty for 125ml water. then PC for 15 ms

I assumed they meant 1/4 teaspoon, which would work fine.. about the same as what I've just used to clone some mushies..

How about putting the 125ml of water and 1/4 teaspoon of honey into a 1 pint jar? I'm fairly sure it'll fit

Since you will be using live tissue and not spores, you could add some peroxide to make it almost foolproof.

About 3cc of hydrogen peroxide solution should be about right for a pint, assuming your peroxide is a 3% solution like most. Check the bottle.

Yeah, and then transfer the mycelium into 1 pint jars full of substrate, that way I don't have to wait 1-2 weeks for the spores to start colonizing.

I guess you would have to add H202 *after* pressure cooking the jar. I think H202 will break down and become useless if pressure cooked. Am I wrong?

Well I don't really see why I need h202 if I pressure cook. All I would need to do is put a micron disk over the top, close the jar, and then pressure cook. I don't see a need for h202 except when I will use a syringe to extract mycelium and transfer it to other jars.

Yeah, you don't need H202 to sterilize your jar. But I think hitler is worried about the little piece of shroom you will add to your jar that might not be sterile!

That's why H202 will help.

At least, that's how I figure it.

dude you dont even need to use the filter disc. it doesnt need that much air exchange. just use a regular lid.
