I will recommend an alcohol lamp to you, very good for mycology, saves lots of time and makes everything easier sterilize red hot outside, bring needle inside
I don't even use gloves... maybe one day.. so far good luck with agar, cloning,lc etc.
you can make a magnet stirrer with a PC fan too+harddisk magnet for your LCs, and put a small nail in it makes everything much easier

Use 70%....it's better than 90% at sanitizing things.
Well isn't 91% more flammable which would mean more heat being transferred to the scalpel? The flame sterilizes not the alcohol
*Facepalm*

We do not flame sterilize our hands...or the latex gloves.......or anything else that is not a needle/scalpel/loop/etc......
70% has a greater water content, which helps penetrate cell walls more efficiently.
This can be googled.
I thought he was talking about flame sterilizing his scalpel...not his hands lol.

We do not use alcohol as a fuel to heat something
We use alcohol to kill things , so 70% is better because it has more water to penetrate cell walls.
Its got nothing to do with transferring heat.Hands or not

That's exactly why I put alcohol in my lamp, to use as a fuel to create a flame. The water content is irrelevant, the flame sterilizes the scalpel not the alcohol. Yes, 70% is better to spray to clean as it penetrates the cell walls of microorganisms more rapidly than 91% but in a alcohol lamp it is better to use 91% to flame sterilize. 70% is 30% water as compared to 91% being only 9% diluted. Thus it creates a hotter flame, if you had an alcohol lamp you would realize this but I assume you do not The heat kills the unwanted micro-organisms, not the alcohol. If that was the case why wouldn't I just dip my scalpel in 71% alcohol and go to work? Because it wouldn't work, just spraying alcohol doesn't insure that my tools and supplies are 100% sterilized...the flame kills everything regardless of what the fueling agent is. Ethanol, ISO, Butante, Napatha etc etc...

I use denatured alcohol in a wick-less alcohol lamp. I light the lamp before I put 70% IPA on my gloved hands.
The inside of my SAB gets sprayed with a light solution of water and Dr. Bronner's Almond Scented Soap
