Is soaking dirty dishes in water with added dish detergent more effective at lifting food remnants?

Been under the impression that the answer is 'no' for a while.

More effective then what? Just water? Then yes, because detergent works by breaking surface tension. Soak first, then scrub.

detergents work by emulsifying the nonpolar materials on the plate (oils, etc) so that they can be combined with water to wash it off. if you do not use detergent the water will not dissolve the oil therefore doing less of a job washing off all the gunk on your plate.

So basically, sudsing water makes the water have less surface tension and this tension-reduced water is more effective for the purpose of soaking dishes? Of course, scrubbing is the true cleaning stage and a sudsy water soak will only provide a minor advantage.

I would like to hear more opinions, though.

Also, warm water is better than cold.

That's how a lot of restaurant washing is done. I worked at a place that consistently gave dirty soup spoons to people. Customers would just keep returning the dirty spoons day after day asking for plastic.

Does the soap stay mostly on the surface of the water or what? I guess it makes sense that it wouldn't make much difference at the soaking stage. Having the water really hot probably does though.

Seems to me that it helps. I've always operated under that assumption anyways.

Yes, detergents(aka soap) break molecular bonds in the whole solution (your sink) and break bonds in lipids like oil or grease and they denature proteins which makes them either more soluble in water or makes them precipitate, which, either way means they aren't on your dishes. Detergents also lyse most cells (cut them open, which kills them), so detergents also sterilize them too.

Obviously yes.

It let water absorb in the food which makes them easier to clean off. Plus the detergent lifts up the grease.

But then again, I wash my dishes with a brush filled with soap directly under the tap water stream.

I'm usually the one that does dishes at dominos and I've noticed the same thing. I still scrub the dishes, but after a few minutes in really hot, soapy water, there clean as hell. I couold probably just take them out of the water and rinse them with a really poweful ho.se thing we got above the 3 compartment sink. We also sanitize them too. Rinse, soak, scrub, rinse again, sanitize, air dry. Dominos a-ok. Plus everything we serve goes in a 450 degree oven for 6.5 minutes. I swear to god that kills anything. Probably the cure for aids right there.

Protip: Rinse dishes off immediately after use, instead of letting them sit around. Then no soaking required.
Take all of like 5 seconds
