Disturbing Commercial I Noticed Floating Around Youtube....

Has anyone seen this?
This is a bit longer than the actual ad that plays before your youtube video but it's pretty much the same thing.
So it's an ad trying to convince people to have children......strange right? But it gets even weirder when you look at who's behind this slick advertisement....
These guys...

Unilever. The worlds third largest consumer goods company as of 2011. They own over 400 brands including, Axe deodorant, Ben and Jerry's Ice Cream, and Dove Shampoo.
They also appear to have a somewhat spotty environmental record; they've been criticized for contributing to deforestation of rain forests and so on.
Does anyone else find this even somewhat disturbing or is it just me? I just find it very creepy that a large corporate entity is trying to raise the population with slick Kony 2012 esque advertising. I mean it makes sense from a marketing perspective, but personally I find it nauseating.
And the strangest thing about all this is the generally positive feedback it seems to be getting. If you look at the youtube page for the video I posted it has about 7.5 million views, mostly postive ratings, and the comments appear to be generally positive in nature.
I dunno....strange world we live in IMO

Yeah, well. I think it was pretty goddamn moving, to be honest.
So what that we don't get everything right? Does that mean we should just give in, give up, lay down and die?

Not at all. I can see how someone would find this very moving, that's what makes it even creepier, it's very well made. I don't think we should just all stop having children but "we" (by that I mean everyone) need to seriously step back and have a long hard look at this population problem, it's very real and it's going to cause some very real problems in the not so distant future. The fact that a big consumer goods corporation is encouraging people to have children just so they can sell more of their shit makes me kinda sick.

I can see that it makes you uncomfortable, but why not judge it for what it is: a really well-made commercial? In fact, one of the best I've seen.
Who's afraid of marketing?

Putting this in perspective a bit: the birth rate in moth European countries actually isn't sufficient to keep the population at this level. So this 'we' you're talking about really isn't one 'we'; it's different groups with different growth rates in different areas. I agree that overpopulation is a big issue, but that's why I said in my previous post: should we just give up then? Should we discourage everybody from having kids, or make every future parent feel guilty about giving into to this fundamental craving that most of us have or develop at some point?
Also, you interpret this as a message to have more kids. I don't see that, really. It just indicates that the next generation has opportunities that other generations didn't have, but that it also faces unprecedented challenges.
It really seems to me that you're trying to twist this into an 'evil corporations' thing, while it's very doubtful that it is.

Since we don't harvest from space we can define earth as a singular entity without regard for manmade boundaries.
Honestly, that commercial is creepier than everything I've read or seen in OTD put together times ten. It's probably the most upsetting thing I've ever seen.

True, the only places where population growth is still a big problem are india, china, africa, and maybe some south american countries, as well as a few smaller places Im sure I forgot.

Right right, I see what you're saying. I guess what I meant by "we" was just that overpopulation is something that is going to effect everyone regardless of whether your particular country has a population problem or not. And seeing as how we all share this planet it seems like something that "we" should all work towards combating, not just India and China.
Isn't it though? Yes they are saying the next generations will have much better opportunities but in saying that they are encouraging people to have children because they now assume that their children are going to live in this wonderful Utopian society made possible by all these wonderful products Unilever is going to create.
You're probably right, it is very possible I'm being a bit biased. I love me some good ole' "evil corporations conspiracy" talk. Just let me have my fun It's nice when things seem so black and white, good guys vs the evil corporations

No technology can make the world's resources endless. EVERYTHING on earth is finite. It's because they've packaged the most destructive message possible in a way that will really influence people.

Who preaches that message then? All I see in the commercial in the OP is an acknowledgement that technology has also contributed to the challenges that the next generation faces.

There's interesting info you can find on this topic by googling japan's population problem. They are declining the fastest with projections estimating their population will reduce by half by the end of the century. In the meantime, around 40% of the population will be comprised of elderly people. This leaves a very 'top heavy' society with very few young people and lots of old people.
The implications of this are interesting. On a personal level, young people understand the need to create a more sustainable society (less population, less consumption) in order to keep the future as positive as possible.
For governments and businesses, this is HORRIBLE news. Govt and businesses need to not only maintain, but constantly INCREASE the amounts of consumption. Govt needs tax revenue so it needs as many worker bees as possible. Not only that but with the top heavy society, the system depends on younger generations paying for all the healthcare/housing and whatnot of the elderly. The business side is simple, they needs more people because more people means more consumption which for them means more profit.

also claims there will still be trees left, but i bet you'll have to go to a museum exhibit to see one in the future.

Highly disturbing, honestly the world is filled with enough people. We need to focus on taking care of the humans that already exist.

Actually, once the atmosphere becomes too polluted they'll put our forests in domes and send the domes to orbit Saturn. Why send them over there and not orbit earth? I don't know. Why not put the domes on earth? Well, then you wouldn't be able to nuke the forest domes (and the cute rabbits) when you got sick of them.
