An Amazing PF Cake Idea

Ok....
So what if I did this:
1. Colonized Cakes
2. Dunked Cakes
3. Sterilized a metal knitting needle
4. Impaled them on the knitting needle
5. Held the needle straight up in an inclosed container with water and perlite in the bottom.
6. Let them fruit.
Was just thinking...
If a PF Cake is sitting on a a surface, the part of the cake that is touching the surface won't fruit, thus wasting a teensy weensy amount of space where you could possibly be getting fruits.
If the cake is suspended on a needle, the bottom could fruit and therefore you could get higher yields.
Additionally, since carbon dioxide sinks, the holes in the bottom of the container would allow the carbon the come out so the cakes weren't in their carbon dioxide emissions. This could also fruit more efficiently.
Though the difference may be small, it might be worth trying. Plus, you could get some cool looking Shroom cakes out of this pretty simple method and reduce the carbon dioxide levels around the PF cakes.
What are your thoughts?

Not bad. I did something like this with a monotub. Worked very well.

I'm no expert but things people here would probably say:
A) surface area and yields aren't connected like that. B) Carbon dioxide doesn't really sink, it is mixed into the air. If it sank like that we would suffocate from lying on the ground.

Ummm no. Pins will grow underneath and lift cakes off the ground if they want to. I've experimented with you're idea and it changes nothing except for allowing your cakes to dry out faster.

I tried this once and all my shrooms grew with tiny myc sweaters on them, it was wierd.

Stack-able wire racks might help you save real estate in your FC, and allow your cakes to fruit on the top and bottom. But I am not sure if they will give you more yield.

Lack of FAE does this.

May not yield more per say but could def help pump out all them nutes quicker before contam set in. I did a small monotub one time. Removedit from the tub when it was done colonizing and placed it in a dub tub that were much larger. I put 2 steel rods through the fresh air exchange holes for it to sit on. Placed a light on top and on bottom. It actually produced much better then anticipated. The ones coming from the bottom were not as monstrous as the top ones but they were by no means small. Its almost like getting 2 flushes at once.

besides genetics, my yields from cakes seem to be very dependent on the moisture that's available. i'd think that having an extra surface available would just mean less fruits growing from the top and sides.

Hmmm. Interesting .
I dont know as it would really increase yeild at all since the amount of nutes and water isnt changing any. But if you could get a "double flush" from top and bottom at once and get them quicker i think it would deff be worth doing just to avoid contamination coming in before final flushes.
Im going to dwell on this Karma to you for ingenuity

Contamination should not "set in" once your cakes are colonized. You either have contams from the get go or you don't IME.

Yeah I should also have added in the original post that I would not being doing pf style cakes but bulk cakes and I would not stab them (due to the threat of opening grains to contamination) but suspended on wire racks or something would be an option

I dont think ive seen any on pf cakes either but you get it with bulk substrates all the time.

Right. I think that's because bulk subs are never sterile and not as nutritious as brf so the myc doesn't consume it in the same way as cakes, leaving 'voids' for contam spores to germinate.. so it's pretty much inevitable after a while. I thought you were talking about pf cakes.

Interesting, wouldn't mind hearing how it goes, ppl are always improving on teks, nad more yield is always good if it works

Surface area and yields are not directly connected like that.

It's not just "opening grains" that risks contamination, any divots or chunks removed from your substrate will pose the same risk.
Lately I see a lot of this "don't break open the grains, the interior isn't colonized."
In practice, it is not that big of a deal. Fully colonized is fully colonized. The mycelium is running through the grain on a microscopic level.

Do you mean overall yield or per flush? Cause I sorta already figured it wouldnt make much of a difference in overall yeild but might condense flushes sorta so that you get larger first flushes and successively smaller on each following (i know that happens anyways but i mean more drastically)
Example: Say you can average 9 dry ounces per tub with an average of 4 flushes before the substrate is used up. No contams, just used up.Do you think that this idea may lead to getting that same 9oz on 3 flushes and substrate being used up instead of 4.
Yeah i knew the divots and stuff too but I didnt realise the myc was running through the grains. Thanks

I pull 9 dry ounces from tubs on a single flush...fruiting from the top only. This is not unusual
Work on fruiting conditions, the mushrooms will flourish if you provide them good conditions and their genetics are up to the task.
Don't worry about trying to get all sides to fruit, this is just going to dry your cake out a little faster. Mushrooms will grow where the conditions are most ideal
