One jar went FULL speed
    #19199580 - 11/28/13 07:04 AM (10 years, 2 months ago)

One is almost fully colonized while the others look like they still have weeks to go..
I inoculated each jar at the same time except for the small one... that one was inoculated BEFORE the other ones and it's not even ready yet...
So I was just wondering how do the jars look? Any contaminants?
& How much more time till the really white one moves on to fruiting?

thanks guys!:scaryshroom::blazed:

If that third pic is the "full speed" one then that's cobweb.

Yeah cobweb sucks and is a result of it being too wet. It grows incredibly fast and is probably the leading contam next to trich.

You really think that's cobweb? I would have thought bacteria, it looks like a jar full of mulk to me. Cobweb is normally more wispy, not as white, and I've never seen it grow anywhere near thick enough to look like that.

Judging by how much further that cake was compared to the others lead me to believe it was cobweb. And if left to grow it will def take on a darker color. I had a cobweb jar I held onto for a while just to see it progress. It def looked very similar to that. It could also be a result of other contaminates setting in as well. I'm not to experienced on contams battling for space but I have had a couple multicoloed jars in my days.

You could be right, I don't think I've ever seen it on brf, so maybe that's what it looks like. In grains at least it tends to look like the jar's full of fur or fuzz, think like a light grey polyfill (I think the greyness is from sporulation?). If that were bacteria I'd expect it to not be so evenly white in color, but it can happen. Either way that thing looks terrible.

I've seen some very similiar pictures of "mycpiss", so I guess that's what (most) of the orange/yellow stuff is. hopefully
But I'm noob anyways.

Not too sure about each one but, it's very noticable in the first pic and I can see suspect colorations in the rest. Let's just say they all look a little funky. What do you smell through the holes in your lids? Also what was your sterilization procedure and inoculation procedure?

edit-as mentioned, they all look too wet as well. Use a 2:1:1 ratio of verm,brf,h2o.

Okay here's what I did..
Filled the jars with 2:1:1 verm,brf,h2o..
Steam bath for 90 minutes, let cool for 12 hours(work shift),
Once I got home from work the jars were pretty much cool enough for inoculation,
I sterilize gloves with alcohol, sterilized the needle with lighter, inoculated.(I sterilized the syringe with lighter between jars)
Once each jars were inoculated I just let them sit there and voila, contamination haha..

Did you cover the holes after inoculating with micropore tape? I never trust the germ barrier as being enough...

no man.. I don't have any.. I put foil over the jars(forgot to mention) during steam bath but No tape over the holes at all... I guess I'm going to have to get some ?
Do i leave this tape on the holes throughout the whole colonizing cycle ??

:whathesaid: You did use a dry verm barrier, right?
It sounds like you did things right. Could have been a contaminated syringe... hard to say what the culprit was. I always wipe my lids with alcohol before noc'n em up and I think it helps a lot but, they should be clean if you keep the foil on till you're ready to go. I wipe everything with alcohol anyway.

Yeah you usually leave the tape on all throughout the colonization. And I personally don't see a use for the germ barrier neither if you have the tape.

I ment to say Verm not germ damn iPhone. But i will be starting with WBS after this grow to get rid of variables like Verm. Just not a big fan of it but deff a fan of micropore tape!

They're all bad son. toss em. Use tyvek and silicone next time. also I'd get a PC or an autoclaive if I were you to prevent future contams.

lol do yourself a favor and DO NOT listen to the troll above. they are not all bad and you don't need tyvek and silicone. those are luxury items. good old fashion verm barrier and a sheet of tin foil thats been wiped down really good with alcohol has always done the trick for me. what you need is a decent pressure cooker. the third picture over is probably not cobweb but none the less it looks like it needs to be pitched. what the contaminate is identified as is neither here nor there.

You can see the trich in the fourth pic right?  Also your supposed to take the foil off the top of the jar to let the mycelium breath.  Micropore tape wouldn't be a bad idea.  If your jars get jostled the contams sitting on top of the verm barrier get knocked down into the brf and grow.  Your not even supposed to tilt the jar when looking at it.  Suppose you had an earthquake which shook the house for 2 seconds then all your jars contamed, the micropore tape might save you in that case.

The orange does look odd.  I would not give up on them.  I'd let them colonize then when you birth them, smell the jars.  There is a signature smell that your mushrooms have that should eliminate all doubt.  It shouldn't smell sweet or sour.  If you want to ensure success, make another batch in another set of jars while these do their thing.

I don't see any cobweb, good luck.

OP any update, new pics that have the jars in focus?

Trich references are to the the green mold in this picture, this jar needs to be pitched and not opened.

lol do yourself a favor and DO NOT listen to the troll above. they are not all bad and you don't need tyvek and silicone. those are luxury items. good old fashion verm barrier and a sheet of tin foil thats been wiped down really good with alcohol has always done the trick for me. what you need is a decent pressure cooker. the third picture over is probably not cobweb but none the less it looks like it needs to be pitched. what the contaminate is identified as is neither here nor there.

I wasn't trying to troll I guess I interpreted the first pictures wrong it looked like he got some bad cotton web to me but I stand corrected. besides the trich and the other two jars. some of them look fantastic.
sorry for the bad info.

Sterilize the jar, dump the contaminated substrate, then wash the jar with soapy water and reuse.

You can just pitch it outside and you'll be safe, but don't go back into your grow room without showering and changing your clothes or you'll probably bring in a good(bad? :P) sporeload.

The videos don't say anything about cleaning contaminated jars afaik so that's hardly helpful. Yes it's safe to do at a friends place. Just imagine you're working with invisible dust or cigarette smoke. It WILL stick all over your clothes. You can do it just fine at your place, but just wash your clothes and take a shower immediately after and you'll be fine (and empty the jars outside, not inside, use a hose to wash them out).
