'Benzo Fury' legal high killed graduate Jennifer Whiteley as she celebrated her new job helping drug addicts

A coroner warns that “even toxicologists are struggling to get to grips” with the dangers of legal highs after a psychology graduate died from a cocktail of drink and drugs while celebrating her new job helping drug addicts

Jennifer Whiteley, 27, had been hired to work with an NHS trust helping drug users and people with depression

A coroner has warned that “even toxicologists are struggling to get to grips” with the dangers of legal highs after a psychology graduate died from a cocktail of drink and drugs while celebrating her new job helping drug addicts.

Jennifer Whiteley, 27, a support worker, began sweating profusely and was taken ill after she and her boyfriend Andrew Tunnah took “bombs” of Benzo Fury at her family home while her parents were on holiday. The former Roman Catholic girls’ school pupil was taken to hospital but died shortly afterwards.

Only days earlier she had been hired to work with an NHS trust helping drug users and people with depression.

The incident occurred in July, just a month after Benzo Fury, also known as 5APB and 5MAPB, was outlawed.

An inquest was told Miss Whiteley, who graduated with a master’s degree in health psychology at Staffordshire University, had been “really happy” at being offered a job at Cheadle Royal Hospital.

She had medical articles published in the Journal of Health Psychology and had applied for a doctorate course to become a clinical health psychologist.

The inquest heard that after picking her 29-year old boyfriend up from his house they purchased cocaine plus vodka and black cherry cider before going back to her family’s semi-detached home in Sale, Greater Manchester.

Mr Tunnah told the hearing he bought the Benzo Fury over the internet in January, when it was still legal.

In a statement to police, Mr Tunnah said: “Jennifer and I have taken drugs hundreds if not thousands of times before. It was how we would chill out together.”

Yet he told the hearing that Miss Whiteley took cocaine “very rarely” and legal highs, “again very rarely”.

Mr Tunnah said the couple both had a pint of vodka and orange before taking the drugs. He said Miss Whiteley had snorted one line of cocaine had taken 25mg of 5APB and 25mg of 5MAPB. In the small hours of the morning, Mr Tunnah became concerned about Miss Whiteley and called paramedics, who found her unconscious and twitching in the bathroom with a rapid heartbeat.

She went into cardiac arrest and was taken to Wythenshawe Hospital but was pronounced dead at 7.05am.

Tests found a number of drugs in her system including ephedrine, ethylphenidate, broken product of mogadon, benzodiazepine, tresaderm, propranolol, levamisole, cocaine and cocaethylene.

Julie Evans, a consultant forensic toxicologist, told the hearing in Sale the drugs could “put a lot of strain of the heart”.

Miss Whiteley’s mother Claire told the inquest she had “absolutely’’ no knowledge about her daughter’s drug taking.

Her father, Edward, said: “I’m quite sure Jennifer would have known the effects of some of the drugs mentioned. It seems to me ludicrous that she would have taken as many drugs as she has done.”

Mr Tunnah was not prosecuted as he bought the highs in January when legal and it was a joint enterprise.

Joanne Kearsley, the South Manchester Coroner, said: “You simply cannot know of the potential impact these designer drugs can have, even the toxicologists are trying to get to grips with them.”

Conclusion: death by misadventure.

"ephedrine, ethylphenidate, broken product of mogadon, benzodiazepine, tresaderm, propranolol, levamisole, cocaine and cocaethylene."

plus the two "five" drugs, and alcohol. holy balls. that's gotta be a rough death... condolences to the family. can't imagine what they are going through right now.

Some of those drugs are quite weird. Google says tresaderm is a popular ear mite treatment for cats and dogs.

So unless she was seriously sick her coke was cut judging by the levamisole and tresaderm in the toxicology. It is unwise to mix drugs like that but it sucks she died because of it.

Yeah I noticed that to but you beat me to it. Apparently tresaderm and levamisole are fairly common cuts for cocaine. I also thought it was interesting the article mentions broken product of mogadon and then benzodiazepene. Technically mogadon is Nitrazepam which is a benzo...

^ Looks like the work of heart failure. Cardiotoxicity due to -APBs high affinity for the 5HT2B agonist. That fact in combination wih propanalol and cocaine. The cocaine and -APB are working one way and the propanalol is working another.

the -APBs have killed a few people now due to bad drug combos.

But 50mg combined 5-APB and 5-MAPB is not a large dose. 5HT2B agonism is cardiotoxic but that is generally with long term use (thickening), and either way it is not going to be enough to cause issues, not at that low a dose. And if she had heart issues you would think it would have surfaced earlier, since she evidently used cocaine. Perhaps the mixture of cocaine + the APBs is what caused her death.

ooh poor girl

soo regardless of the adulterants in her coke.

5APB, then cocaine + alchohol = cocaethylene (puts a strain on the heart already)

then with benzodiazepine (valium) as well? thats a HELL of alot of conflicting signals, im not surprised her heart gave out :frown:

Benzos do not have any conflicting action on the heart.
You are right about the other ones though.

That's what I'm saying but not all at the same time, you are forgetting she had propanolol in her system, which means the cocaine and APB were speeding up her heart while the propanalol dangerously slowed it down. Likely she took propanolol for the same reason would one take a benzo - things are going a little fast and you need to chill. The alcohol only compounded these negative effects. Cocaine and propanalol alone are a dangerous combo. Propanalol is not an adulterant in cocaine. you also need to factor in that females metabolize drugs and alcohol a lot more efficiently than men so smaller doses go a longer way.

Oops I missed the part about the propanalol. Yeah beta-blockers are a dangerous combination with cocaine (and other stimulants to a lesser degree). I wonder if she knew that.

I first heard about "Benzo Fury" from a banner ad on a site called "shroomery.org". Hopefully they've stopped running that one.

it's really quite sad--  she was found by the boyfriend in the bathroom on the floor unconscious.  I wonder if she was dipping into her parents meds to try and slow down?  Xanax + propanolol + Alcohol sounds pretty dangerous as is...  you know people do strange things when under the influence

So a "graduate student" who was going to "help" people with drug problems had, according to her boyfriend done drugs "thousands of times".

Not actually that sad that someone so naive and stupid isn't out there dispensing 'advice' and 'knowledge' to those in really vulnerable situations.

Sounds like a fucking idiot to me. I have had a couple of "drug workers" in my time that were utterly naive about all kinds of things. Telling me you couldn't make opium from the Papaver Somniferum that grows in the UK, and that cocaine and crack were "entirely different drugs"...

One less drug abusing moron not spreading misinformation, not really that sad if I am brutally honest. As sad as any other death for sure, but hardly something she of all people couldn't see coming. Mixing pints of liquor with benzos, cocaine and RC's..

Sucks for her family, maybe would have sucked more for her clients to be "helped" by a hypocrite moron who was a poly drug addict from the sound of it.
