Log questions
    #19199409 - 11/28/13 05:26 AM (10 years, 2 months ago)

I'm new to log method and since i've some, i thought why not use it for chicken of the woods.

The steps are-
1-soak the logs? For how long?
2-drill holes- how many and all sides?
3-plug in the dowel. (Can one just add in grain spawn in it?)
4- cover the holes. Is soil good enough?
5- leave it in a cool place.
6- How often does one have to spray water?

You don't want the spawn to dry out before it spreads to the log itself, so I doubt soil would be good enough. Use wax.

Definitely drill holes on all sides.

If the log is long enough (6'?) you can stick it upright in the ground and it will wick up water from the soil so you won't have to spray it.

1. No need to soak fresh cut logs.
2. Diamond pattern around the entire thing. Two inch rows with six inch spacing between plugs is simple for beginners. Google "Mushroom plug diamond pattern".
3. Grain spawn or sawdust spawn can work, but grain spawn can be problematic with pests outdoors. Plugs are reliable.
4. NO SOIL! It will infect the outside of your plugs with disease and tricoderma ASAP... Wax absolutely required anywhere in the US except some parts of the east/southeast coast. I find it's best to let the log surfaces and outsides of the plugs to dry out a little so the wax sticks solidly.
5. Leave it in a shady place where it gets to around 90F max in summer if possible. Where are you at? If your in the north best to use a shady sunny south facing slope.
6. Depends upon how dry your climate is and if your logs are placed in the ground or not.
