Liberal Authors Triumphant as US bookshelves lean left
    #1917105 - 09/14/03 11:53 PM (20 years, 6 months ago)

Article

I was amazed when I walked into a Barnes and Nobles my first day back in the Bible belt of DFW and saw a ridiculous amount of left leaning books on the prominent mid isle and end cap displays.  Noam Chomsky?  Ariana? Lions and Tigers and Bears... OH MY!

I'm just happy to hear that Molly Ivins has another book coming out   If y'all haven't read "Shrub", you should run out now and grab it.

She's a political journalist (and I don't use that word lightly anymore) who writes for the Dallas Morning News, and has been an insider in Texas politics for 25 years or so now...  When I first saw "Shrub", I thought it was going to be yet another snotty, rabid, anti-bush for no real reason expose. It is, however, an extremely well written (and well documented for those of you who don't believe someone at their word), and even humorous look at Texas politics in general, and Bush's rise to power in Texas specifically.  GREAT read - and I look forward to more from Mrs. Ivins in the near future.

Yah - Naomi Klein is a goddess as well.
She also has a book out called "Windows and Fences", which is essentially a collection of her writings, columns, essays, etc. from when she began researching globalization and privatization after the 1999(?) WTO demonstrations in Seattle. VERY illuminating.

Once you read that, you should also read "Globalization and it's Discontents" by Joseph Stiglitz. Stiglitz is a former bigwig in the WTO (or IMF - my dyslexia is nasty this morning) and an economic wiz-kid, who left the WTO after realizing what their 'business' practices are doing to the world. Exceptional reading.

I suppose with television and the media being so completely in the corporate pocket, books are one way people can access truth.

Unfortunately, reading isn't really something Americans usually like to do. Most would rather just watch Jerry Springer or American Idol.

There was a recent study showing that the better educated tend to lean more to the left, and I'm pretty sure you don't need a study to figure out that the better educated also tend to write more books.

We're also traitors, according the her. I think this is why liberal authors are doing well right now. Because right-wing authors like her are idiots.

Did she actually say that? If she did it's one of the funniest things I have ever read.

Both the Left and the Right have their idiots. But, they also have
some rational and logical members too.

Yes, but unfortunately the intelligent right-wingers don't seem to sell many books.

Comedy almost always does well.

You cannot legislate the poor into prosperity by legislating the wealthy out of prosperity. What one person receives without working for another person must work for without receiving. The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for that my dear friend is the beginning of the end of any nation. You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it. ~ Adrian Rogers
