Another Wacky Substrate Idea!!! 1

By now, if you've kept up on my threads, y'all should realize I have a fascination with testing odd substrates (we'll not mention the coconut, which I still think is possible if not probable). Here's another wacky idea I came up with awhile back that preliminary tests were quite positive. Using Turkey Tail mushrooms as a substrate. I tested this by supplementing hickory chips with whole TT fruits and some grass seed. I hydrated the sub mixture in a coffee and wood ash brew for over 24 hrs, drained thoroughly, loaded it in a large mycobag, PC'd for 2 hrs, then inoculated with P. Allenii spores. Surprisingly, the spores germinated and took hold of the TT first. The TT colonized the fastest, followed by the wood chips, then the grass seed. It eventually colonized to 100% and was clean. When I decided to quit growing actives I gave this, and all other active cultures to SWIM. He was gracious enough to continue my experiment and recently spawned a jar of dowels and a jar of popcorn (for GLC) from the original bag. In each jar he put a piece of wood chip and a TT mushroom to compare the transfer from each to the new substrate. The myc is literally leaping off of the TT and is creeping off the wood chip in both jars.
I'll have to dig through my pics to see if I have any from when I was in possession of the bag, and I'll take pics of everything next time I go to SWIM's house. I'll update the OP with pics when I get them all together.
I plan on running another test batch with a jar of Yellow Oyster, as soon as I get off my ass and go harvest some TT. I'm thinking maybe a pasteurized TT/verm versus sterilized TT/verm side by side. I plan on shredding the TT this time and using distilled water with no additives, other than lime or ash to bring the pH to 12. I'll then split the sub into two medium sized bags, sterilize one and pasteurize the other. I'll use a pint of spawn for each out of the same quart jar.
I bring this to everyone here to discuss the "why" of the accelerated virile growth. I have my thoughts on it, of course, but I want to hear y'all's thoughts as well.

Still haven't found the old pics, or made it over to SWIM's house to take pics. Here are some pics of my next test.

These are old dried out TTs. I thoroughly scrubbed them, then rinsed and air dried for a bit. I then shredded them in a blender until they resembled fine mulch. They weighed around 25g hydrated, so I added hydrated verm to get a 50/50 mix (by volume, not weight). Split the sub into three small mycobags and PC'd or 105 minutes. Going to spawn with Yellow, King, and Blue Oyster grain spawn.

Thanks, but I'll save the celebration for when I find out whether myc will grow on straight TT/verm. I didn't use any coffee or gypsum so I can see if the mix is enough.

I've never seen someone use "SWIM" when talking about growing edibles.

What benefit does wood ash bring? I've got probably 30-40 pounds of ashes I've saved.

I guess you missed the part about the first test being done with Ps. Allenii, and this; Quote:
When I decided to quit growing actives I gave this, and all other active cultures to SWIM.
Wood ash raises the pH, like hydrated lime.

I went by SWIM's house and took pics of the Alleni myc. My phone can only take so good of pics through the glass jar and mycobag so bare with me.
First are pics of the dowels spawned with one piece of colonized TT and wood chip each in one jars of dowels. The first pics are of several angles of the colonized TT. I had a hell of a time getting the dowel clump to break loose so I could see the TT.

The next pic is of the woodchip, which the dowels fell away from easily.

The last pics are of how the original spawn bag looks now. The last two pics are kinda blurry, but you can still make out the difference in colonization thickness and the bright white myc on the TT versus the wood chips.

BTW, I inoculated the three small mycobags with Lion's Mane LC. The myc is taking to the tt/verm substrate nicely. I didn't mix up the sub after inoculating, so there is a nice line of myc growing out. I will post pics of it in a couple days, after they've colonized more.

Just to get the record straight for the last time, SWIM is not growing edibles for me. If you will actually read the thread fully you will see that SWIM is continuing my test on the Psilocybe Allenii strain, I am conducting the 2nd test on edible species.

so you got a grow kit that was already colonizing with cubensis?

What? Are you sure you're replying to the right thread? Do you need medical attention? You seem to be hallucinating words. Are you ok, or did you take too much?

Interesting thread - I imagine you've already boiled and decocted the medicine from the TT? Interesting way to use old mushrooms. I've heard (and seen the product) that they can be ground up and made into a felt like paper.
Though, I grok that you are more interested in using them as substrate.

I didn't extract anything from these. They were old ones still left on the downed tree from spring. Here's pics of them from earlier this year.

The Lion's Mane is colonizing it alright, will post picks when they are 100% so I can take them out of the bags to photograph.
