Spent cakes lazily spawned to coir..IP
    #19198305 - 11/27/13 09:04 PM (10 years, 2 months ago)

So with nothing to lose I decided to take four spent as shit 1/4 pint cakes, nearly completely dried out, and try to spawn them to some coir. First, I rounded up a tupperware container, bowl, and gallon size ziplock freezer bag. Then I cut/busted a 1/4 brick of coir off and threw it in a bowl and held it under the sink and added enough water to bring it to approximate field capacity, then added a little bit more. I dumped about an equal amount of verm straight out of the bag into the bowl and used my hand to churn it all up. I did wash my hands but, that's as far as I went with any kind of sterility or sanitization.
Next I hand-shoveled it all into a gallon ziplock and closed it. I grabbed a cheese grater out of the kitchen  and proceeded to take my 4 baby cakes into the bathroom and rinse them well under cold water from the faucet. Then I opened up my ziplock and held the grater over it and grated my cakes into it. After that I stuck my arm in there and mixed it all up real good.
I filled the tupperware almost to the top, leaving about .75" of space with about 2.25" of sub, leveled it out and snapped the lid on. I took a knife and made a small hole in the center of the lid and covered it with a piece of micropore tape.
For the bag with all the rest in it, I just let the air out, cut a small slit in it and taped that as well then rolled it in half to make a "brick". That was 2 days ago and already there are a lot of little spots in the tupperware where the myc is starting to take hold. The bag doesn't have as much growth but, is still showing signs. I'm guessing it has something to do with the sub being packed a little tighter and maybe from less oxygen.
Anyway, this is my new lazy mans spawning method that utilizes old but, otherwise healthy, spent cakes to hopefully produce more mushrooms. I'll let y'all know how it turns out and take some pics when there's more to see. I'll be pretty amazed if it doesn't contam, honestly but, ya never know. No signs of contam yet.
Forgot to add that I sprayed the top of the sub in the tupperware with a 1/10 h2o2 solution but, not the bag. Sorry this post is so long. Carry on.

Here's what I'm working with. Day 2, going on 3..

This is actually interesting.  I feel that if you properly re-hydrate a spent cake at most or even add more nutrients, you can regrow new life to grow more booms.  Hell definitely keep us updated this is neat.
