Get a bank account if you don't have one, make sure you can wire money internationally. Then register at either Mtgox, Bitstamp, or BTC-E and transfer money to your account and buy coins. Only problem is wires can take time.

Why is there not an easy, USA based, bit coin company? Seems like the demand is there, and I think a lot more people would invest if it were more simple

Basically what the title implies. It's a digital wallet. Allows you to store your bitcoins but also transfer them. Note that there is a second type of wallet: if you're dealing with the exchanges for trading crypto-currencies (bitcoin, litecoin, dollars, etc.) you'll have web wallets.
A good way to buy bitcoins and litecoins is litecoinlocal.org and localbitcoins.com.
You can also buy from anyone on the web, including Shroomery members: Marketplace forum
Note that litecoin went from like 10 dollars to currently 36 dollars in the past 24 hours.

You download the file from bitcoin.org for you operating system (i.e windows) and run it. Then you wait because the first time its run it will take a while to catch up with the network. You can password protect it, but beware if you lose/forget the password that money is gone forever. There are also online wallet options.

I was just thinking of you. I also purchased 2 more litecoins for $9 each after our transaction (it was all my meager coffers could afford).

Litecoin rose another 10 dollars in the past 8 hours.
By the way, if anyone wants to buy litecoins, try litecoinlocal.org (or buy bitcoins at localbitcoins.com and exchange them for litecoins).
