Do you think that people that aren't interested in politics are less intelligent?

Thread title says it all.
Sure politics is an interest you can have just like collecting stamps. So not being interested in it shouln't be a big deal right?
The thing is, politics directly affect your life and the future of your country so its not a regular interest you know.
What do you guys think?

I used to be really interested in politics but I got bored with it. What you know doesn't change anything. I actually think, if anything, following 'politics' as it's defined by our media as a sign of lesser intelligence.

I think people who aren't interested in the world around them are less interesting themselves. The world around us includes politics to a degree, sure, but the spectacle of politics is IMO vaguely nauseating and full of people who take themselves and their ridiculous beliefs far too seriously. I also believe many things that are handled by politicians should be handled by experts instead, but that's another thing.
Intelligence does not enter into it at all I think. It's possible to be extremely intelligent and not the slightest bit interested in the world.

I think people not interested in space seem stupid but I guess it's just different strokes.
I do think people who think shit like TED Talks are as valuable as books are pretty fucking getting there stupid.

I'm a huge stamp collector. In fact, I'm trying to collect ALL the stamps.
I've collected so many stamps so far that postage keeps increasing. USPS can't keep up with stamp demand.
The postal service is going to shut down because I'm the stamp guy, and I have succeeded in making a difference.
tl;dr One person one vote. My vote won't make a difference. I focus my energy elsewhere. I can be that guy who has a novel idea that alters the course of history.

There are many intelligent people whose list of interests doesn't really include politics (some of whom might have focused more on math or science or whatever.) There are also people who are just ignorant in general because they haven't put in the effort to learn much about anything. Someone with no interest in politics could be either of those two extremes or somewhere in between. The same goes for any number of other topics as well.

politics are obviously important. but as far as americans go our system is designed to be hard to follow. i don't necessarily assume that someone is stupid because they feel discouraged and/or apathetic to the american political system because of that fact.

I used to listen to talk radio a lot and watch cspan. I knew who all the supreme court justices were, who all the cabinet members were, all about whatever current legislation was going on and I was involved in local politics and knew a lot about my state politics. Now I have to check who's sec of state, defense, even vp. I just don't give a fuck anymore. I care more about if the Cavs have a good point guard and I don't even support the Cavs. At least, with sports what you see is what you get. Kyrie can either distribute or he can't. I read somewhere that following politics was stupid because it's all misinformation and it gives you an illusion of understanding shit that you really don't. Here's what I know about politics. People who become powerful are always assholes. Assholes shouldn't be powerful. Everything about the government sucks. I hate their fucking guts. The end.

Its impossible to get unbiased political coverage, therefore anyone following politics through the news is simply being brainwashed. I think political parties are BS too. I take a stance on issues based on my morals and beliefs, not simply to correlate with any given party. Politics has become so polarized that no real change is possible

Not necessarily. You can be genius and never think a thing about politics. You can be retarded and love politics. You can be a genius and love politics, you can be a moron and love politics. It has nothing to do with intelligence. Some things attract intelligence though more so than others but its still just a personal choice to be interested or not. You could argue that because politics changes our lives then intelligent people should be or are more interested in politics but that isn't always the case. I hate politics, it's back and forth gibberish that never gets settled, no one is 100% right and I think a lot of it is rigged. Politics is boring and liberals are too damn scared to make a move or take action and republicans are too damn stuck up, selfish and greedy.
I lean left but I'm pretty close to the middle ground on this. I don't bother keepin up to date cause its really annoying and you feel like there is no hope. Everything is fading fast so I just say fuck and if they decide to go tyrant on us well then I've got a gun and ill happily die a martyr for freedom.

I agree with both of these sentences. I really started to keep up with politics for about six months, and I became so hopeless about the whole process that I just gave up caring. I figured, if I'm not willing to wade through a thousand tons of dogshit (I'm not) than making any kind of real difference is not really in my future. And if I'm not going to make a real difference, the best bet is to live my life the way I want and try to keep out of the eyes of authority figures, be they my bosses or CIA.

This is kind of a narrow minded way to look at things.People focus their attentions and talents in different ways there is no universal meter for measuring intelligence. You could be pants on head retarded and interested in politics. You can be brilliant and never pay attention to politics. One size does not fit all.

No, I'm not the slightest bit interested in politics and I would consider myself fairly intelligent.. However I constantly see/hear people who ARE interested in them say some of the dumbest shit I've ever read/heard, especially those who are on the far right or far left.
If anything, I honestly think it's the other way around.

Actually, I think that people who don't follow politics are more intelligent.
Remember when the big financial crisis happened back in 2008? All the bank bailouts? Personally I thought that it was complete and utter bullshit that these big banks were getting blank checks.
Well 2008, also happened to be an election year; Bush's term was ending, and Obama was running against McCain. I was looking forward to voting for the candidate that would NOT bail out the banks.
So what did these fuckers do? Bush, McCain, and Obama all met, and agreed that regardless of the outcome, the banks would be bailed out!
Bah... bullshit. If Hollywood won't take you, there's always Washington.

Fuck politics. I could give a shit less what happens to the future of this shit country.
Ill just concentrate on what makes me happy and let everyone else argue needlessly about concepts that will never truly change.

I think that's too much of a generalization to say they're less intelligent. Apathetic may be a better word. You are only born with so many fucks to give. Trying gain anything through politics is like beating your head against a wall

The only thing people need to know about politics is that the average people have no power at all within the current system. It's all run by and for the rich. A plutocracy. Your vote counts for either one bought candidate or another. Protests and petitions are useless. Enjoy.

I used to be really into politics then I realized I won't ever be able to make a change and all the lobbying seems pointless if you can't pursue your goals.
Just like I wanted to be lawyer because I thought we had a justice system
I don't see how voting makes you intelligent.

One need merely to read the comments sections on news web sites to realize that being interested in politics is no sure sign of intelligence.

Politics, governments, and stratified societies bring out the worst in people. People existed for a really long time in small tribes with no money and basically no hierarchy except what one earned through age or experience. Love and sharing kept us alive. Now we fight over money and destroy our only home to make the rich richer.

And each of those people probably vote, which is part of the reason it's meaningless and won't change anything.
Perhaps an intelligence test for voting, rather than the only requirement being to simply survive a certain number of years like it is now?

If there is a constitutional way to require a certain IQ to vote, I could live with that. Of course, a high IQ should be mandatory to have children. Only those who have made a net payment of taxes should be allowed to vote.
None of those will happen, but it's good to dream.
Fortunately this country does not mandate that people vote.

Not less intelligent, maybe ignorant, but it all depends. It's quite difficult to label someone as 'unintelligent' for their lack of knowledge in politics. It's a package, you know, like demeanor and other forms of communication can demonstrate intelligence together.

Phrase it however you wish. There should be a test.
Perhaps 4 questions at random from the immigration test.
Or name 4 of the 9 Supreme Court Justices.

I think people that don't at least keep up with relevant aspects of politics that affect them are complacent fools. They are either to cowardly and in denial about the shitty direction America is headed or too stupid to realize how precious the freedoms we have are and generally take them for granted. Or perhaps they have swallowed the patriotic jizz and are so pumped up with propaganda and bullshit from university, or military, or faux news that they cannot see straight anymore or even reason for themselves instead regurgitating talking points because that's easier to accept than diving into the rabbit hole.
So I would specify I think people are emotionally or logically stupid pursuant to being willfully ignorant. We are pacified by drugs, by hope, by sex, by material pleasures, by our pursuit of scientism and pop psychologies notions of "happiness", by Kim Kardashians ass, by sitting in comas in a room watching dumbshits with concussions throw around a pigskin. We are afraid of oblivion, afraid of death, afraid of uncertainty, afraid of meekness.

Actually the questions should be more direct and relevant: Do you support equality for all, church/state separation, evolution, and so on... They hook you up to a lie detector so you don't just tell them what they want to hear. If the answer is no to any of the above, you don't get a vote because you're too stupid. Get those non-issues fixed and over with. Then the more controversial issues that have legitimate claims on both sides can be worked out by intelligent people. One doesn't need to know who the supreme court judges are to be on the right side of those fundamental issues.

lie detectors are fallible though. a sizable chunk of the population in the US would say no to your questions and they surely aren't stupid either.

if you assume that a High IQ is an above average IQ, then less than half the population would reproduce leading to a slow, but significant decline in the number of children and eventually no children would be produced.

Bigots don't get to vote because they damage society. Equality for all is not up for discussion in any rational society. Neither is church/state separation (we don't want a theocracy, do we?) and evolution and science in general being attacked holds back progress.
If we want our society to improve, the stupid people need to lose their power over it. Extreme? Sure. Effective? Quite possibly.

I think the opposite.
If you're not capable of realising that money is voting and politics is funded by and therefore controlled by financial powers then you're not very intelligent.
You could say lacking in care but I mean it doesn't take a genius to observe that "change" never happens unless its benefiting the established financial powers and has little to nothing to do with the morality politics presents as a facade.

Well I'm not interested in politics and I'm retarded; so I'm inclined to answer yeah.
Though the only reason I'm not interested in it is because people in power are going to be doing whatever the fuck they want anyway, a nobody like me showing interest in them isn't going to move any tides. Theres really only two reasons to follow politics imo: To decide who you're going to vote for and as a topic of discussion. I don't vote and no one I know is interested enough to research that shit .

i think it can be both, some intelligent people realise the system is bullshit and don't get involved and dont want to know whats going on. other intelligent people at least like to know whats going on. other intelligent people like to follow whats going on and also like to think of practical alternatives some stupid people can follow the stories but not know how wrong or misleading the media can be. some stupid people can be oblivious to everything or very dismissive of politics so they don't bother engaging with it some stupid people can have the curiosity and humility of knowing they don't know much so are perhaps more open to alternatives.
one person might feel pretty powerless against the monstrosity of it all but this is why people need to make grassroots organisations to act collectively.
