27qt mini monotub
    #19197329 - 11/27/13 04:52 PM (10 years, 2 months ago)

For a 27qt tub how much substrate should i use & what size/spacing should i use for the holes?

I was going for a 3-4in sub depth with 4qts spawn & 1 daimons 50/50 bucket so i got a small tub rather than a big 66qt & then realized 14.5qts of sub is ~half the tub.

I havnt seen much on 27qt monos to really get an idea of how much sub to use or how big/far apart the holes should be.

Dump water in to find your substrate depth. I use my hand. Laying my hand flat with my pinky touching and fingers together, the distance between the 2 widest points (the thumb and pinky knuckles) makes about 3.5". Count how many quarts it takes to get to that depth. Or use a ruler or whatever.

Holes, I can't help you with. If you want to deviate from the TEK, you're on your own. I suggest doing it the way it was written. I'd probably use 1" or 1.25" holes for that.

And his name is Damion5050, it has nothing to do with 50/50 anything, which isn't even close to the ratio of stuff you're using.

These are the TEKs I use. They're all as cheap and easy as possible, just like your mom.

You could make 2 tubs with a 2:5 - 2:6 ratio, idk how deep it would be though, because I do not know the exact dimensions of your tub.

Best advice is to measure 8qt of something and dump it in and see if that gets you to 3"-4", if it does you have enough to do 2 tubs with a 2:6 ratio.

I am not sure how much longer it takes to colonize with a 1:3 ratio than 1:1.

Damion's 50/50 tek.

When will it ever end! We're going to have to get the mods to edit his username to just Damion

I just started using 20qt tubs, for the most recent one I had about 2 quarts of spawn and 5 quarts of substrate (used slightly less than half a brick, slightly less than 1 quart of verm, and slightly more than 2 quarts of water), this filled my 20qt tub to almost a 3.5" depth, holes are at the 3.75" mark.  that would be a 1:2.5 ratio, my first one is almost fully colonized and it has been 5 days.  hope that helps for reference

edit:  what would be more helpful, of course, are the dimensions of my tubs...  the 20qts I'm using are 16" long and 9" wide, more or less

I used a mini mono design that stromrider helped me with the substrate depth is 3 inches using 1 qt of spawn at a 1  to 3 ratio with coco/verm using frankhorrigans tek. The pics speak for themselves.  I drilled my holes at one inch above substrate level 1.5 inch holes and 1 hole on each end as high as possible the same size.

whenever i made holes for a brand new mono i always made them after the substrate was fully colonized and ready to fruit. that way i knew EXACTLY where to make the holes! i have a gas stove so i would take a 1.5 inch metal pipe and get it hot as hell and then just melt right through the plastic like butter. i'd try my best not to breathe any of the fumes and i'd do it in a well ventilated area.

i always did 30qt tubs, and i'd prepare 2 at a time. i loved that particular size for monos because the regular 1 brick coir/verm recipe would fit perfectly between 2 tubs. the smaller substrates are much easier to handle and fit nicely in a 5 gallon bucket (which is what i would dunk them in).

the length and width of my 30qts were ~12X10.5 inches at the sub level. i always used 1.5 inch holes and followed the standard hole design.

here some 30qt action where you can see how close my holes are to the substrate. i like them that way because the substrate shrinks a lot as it fruits.

what do you usually average on a first flush with that size?

damn, that's a hell of a canopy, are you using multispore or...?

and you actually take the block out of the monotub to dunk?
