Yep, it likes to grow mold pretty quickly.

Ah, I was wondering if it would help by covering up any exposed substrate surface after harvesting...
One more question while I got you here Frank: are you ever mixing your grain inside the bags around while they're colonizing? I would assume you would.
I bought a bunch of these for my next big project, and have never used them before. Planning on using 6 quarts each & inoculating with agar wedges.

Nah, it just gives molds a nice spot to germinate on the substrate as your mycelium weakens.
As for the bags, I only use a master jar to inoculate them. They get shaken after they get tied off and not messed with again until full colonization.
I don't trust the bags to more than a single shake, to be honest. I've had a few tear or become otherwise compromised on me, so I no longer risk it.

So I decided to not case this project, for time's sake.
The dozen or so tubs coming up right after this, I will case at least half of them.
Hopefully your disappointment will be alleviated by this picture of some of the tubs fruiting

More to come soon.

Cheers NOTHING! You broke my heart frank....Ripped it out and stomped it.
I am however going to hold you to case at least half of them. I always case, and it came from my experience with portabello. Is it necessary for cubes? No (I do agree). Is it beneficial however? I cannot answer that, but hopefully we get some good comparisons.

when u stuff ur bottom holes, do u wedge more than one balled up piece of poly to get it so tight? some of those look like there are 3 distinct wedges (top three in right stack best example from ur pic). is that coincidence? cause if not, Im gonna try that. if it is, I'm.....gonna try that
I am never content with the tightness of bottom holes, I want to stick the whole bag in there sometimes.
sry if this off topic... but i never noticed in ur previous teks the "sectoring" of ur bottom poly

Well we both know how much that actually means

I don't know if coincidence is the right word, it's just how the polyfill stuffed into the hole
I just take a softball-sized (or larger) wad and shove it in there as tightly as possible, from the outside in.

Hell yeah. That's what you call BULK! Hopefully I'll learn a thing or two from this. Must be a bitch to figure out how to stagger the growth periods on the mono's, though. And why always bird seed, Frank, instead of rye? Just a personal preference?

Frank, have you ever run an isolate test on coir/verm etc versus a casing mix of peat and verm?
