fusarium or overreacting?
    #19195154 - 11/27/13 05:48 AM (10 years, 2 months ago)

Hi, I've been lurking for a while and need some help from any one with a bit of knowledge on a couple of things.

I've done a couple of pf tek grows in the past and I've got some brf jars incubating at the mo (been there for 2wks). I isolated one of the jars 3 days ago because there was a really fine rusty brown trail on the bottom of the jar, didn't think much of it. Following day noticed that the uncolonized parts of cake seemed to have a very pale pink / purple tinge. Yesterday I checked again and it had definitely grown and the jar was giving off some serious heat, so I bagged it up and thew it out.

I know this would be easier if I had pics but I just wanted the jar out of the house.

I have been searching the contam forum for the last couple days trying to figure out what the purple stuff was. I can't find a pic that looks like mine all the ones on here are quite bright purple or pink, like I said mine was really pale.

Any way I've got myself into a bit of a state and panic that it was fusarium. Does it grow on brf? And if it was fusarium can me or my kids get ill. I didn't open the jar or smell it but obviously the lid had holes in for inoculation and I handled the jar to look at it. How long after being exposed to it would you get ill?

Sorry for long post and possibly sounding like a mad woman but any info would be appreciated. Thanks

I'm not aware of anyone identifying what exactly that purple-pink contaminant(s) is. It's a somewhat common contaminant of BRF cakes.

However there's nothing to worry about if you didn't even open the jar and tossed it out shortly after it appeared.

Thanks for the reply. I am slighty less worried now. Spose I just need to forget about it. I knew about contams but had no idea they could be so dangerous to health! I was tempted at one point to just throw everything out and never think about growing again :frown:
