Possible Chaga Mushroom (Inonotus Obliquus) found in Australia??

...specifically in South-Eastern Queensland. I am aware that Chaga usually grows in the northern hemisphere in the colder climates so i'd be pretty surprised if this is Chaga. However it does look very similar.
Found growing near the bottom of a tree near a dried up lake bed in shady conditions. I kicked a bit off and saw that was orange inside, just like Chaga.

Size comparison.

There was another growing near by that my friend kicked right off the tree.

Can provide more pics if need, will just have to head back down there tomorrow.

I don't think Inonotus obliquus occurs in Australia. There are no records listed in the Atlas of Living Australia (which includes herbarium records). I can find records of 14 other Inonotus species but not I. obliquus.
I'm not familiar with any of the other Inonotus species (or even similar genera), so I'm not going to be much help.

I don't think its Chaga. I've been finding lots here in Canada, and it makes a great tasting tea. It might be another species of Inonotus, but I've only ever knowingly found obliquus. I'll try and get some pictures up of my finds to give some comparison, but I have to find my usb cord for my phone first.
Do you have any field guides specific to Australia? That might be a good place to start.

I'd have to go with not chaga as well.
Possibly Inonotus glomeratus. Most searches for this will turn up the fruiting bodies, but it produces a tree rot that looks like that and the fruiting bodies don't show up until after the tree dies, from what I understand.
see bottom two pics in this link
Inonotus glomeratus did show up on the Atlas of living australia.
