Smell after dunk

First grow. I finally birthed 2 cakes but just ran into something unusual..
So yesterday I popped them out of the jars and stuck them in water. I left them there for I think 20 - 22h? Then when I pulled them out of the water I noticed a strange smell.. I have no idea what to compare the smell to because I honestly never smelled this before.. Kinda sour..? I thought it smelled unnatural like some cleaning chemical or something...
I went further to see if others had the same problem, and there were barely any forums about this and they pretty much gave every answer possible.. so I'm still lost if this smell is okay or should I do something about it..
Whether it is okay or bad I would still like to leave it and see where it goes, but my main concern is would it be harmful to mine or my pets health to let it grow? If so I will have to chuck it.

There's always a small amount of bacteria that grows in the dunk water, thus the smell. That's why we recommend a good rinse after the dunk.

Had the same problem and RR said there might be yeast bacteria but they don't harm fully colonized substrate. He stated that it might even be good for pinning.

Sweet. Thanks guys. I rinsed them and the smell seems to have went away for the most part.

Also, if anyone else comes along, I was wondering, what's the best amount of time to keep the cakes dunked? I feel my 22h dunk might have been a little much?

y 3 days? just give it a couple hours for the dry verm to stick, mist when it no longer glistens

Oh yeah sorry, I'm stuck on Growkits atm. Dunking and birthing them inside a SGFC and when you have soaked the perlite just before it usually lasts for three days and up to a week depending on how warm and how fast your FAE permeates the FC or not. This means in my case there is also a res effect because of the verm casing layer. I just wanted to say that overwatering plus decent fanning results in a hell of a pinset and a lot of small aborts but without res I'm not so sure. O2 for the win. Better soak it right one time and wait till something happens and then mist again like a rainshower. IMMO less prone to mistakes.
Ah btw speaking of soaking the sub AND the Perlite.
Oh yeah and there was another thread years ago which said that after 12 hours a cake is only osaked with 70 percent of the water it can take (no idea if this is true, maybe someone help me out on this).

It's not a rez-effect, it's just a psuedo casing layer.

Dead sure. Rez-effect is mixing spawn 1:1 with just verm.

But isn't that merely one tek that uses the rez-effect? To me it seemed to stand for reservoir effect. Seems there are different attempts to creating a reservoir. For example inner reservoir tek. Seen something once about adding a thick verm layer on top of the cake which serves as a reservoir. Hm. I can't find it right now.
