Dog fights?
    #19193551 - 11/26/13 06:39 PM (10 years, 2 months ago)

I was curious to hear if any of you know a good way to break up a dog fight. I am a dog groomer, and today me and my boss had to break up an Australian Shepard and a Corgi. They live together, but holy shit I did not expect them to go at it. My boss grabbed a chair and pinned the Aussi down while I grabbed that Corgi by the scruff of the neck and put it in a kennel. She told me that was stupid and I should have done something differently. I make my choices, I know what happens, but really what else could I have done? She was stuck pinning one dog down and I didn't think I could grab a noose quick enough. Do you suggest any other methods? I don't want to get bit, but I don't want to see a dog shred apart another dog. We don't normally co-mingle, but they lived together so we thought they were alright.

Edit: I did kick at his head first, but he wouldn't move, so then I grabbed him.

Hold the back legs of the dog (while another person does the same with the other dog), and then start walking backwards of course pulling the dog that way, I heard that method works:shrug:.

Breaking up a dog fight (or any animal fight) is a hazardous task, regardless of how you go about it, and no method is free of risk. Fight or flight response is a powerful thing, and can even result in a dog mauling a long time, loving owner in the heat of the moment. The best method I've heard of involves two people (assuming it is two dogs fighting).

1) Each person approaches one dog from behind.
2) Grab the back legs of both dogs and lift them up (wheelbarrow style).
3) Pull the dogs apart, and then begin to walk in circles around the front of the dog--this forces the dog to keep manoeuvring on their front paws, preventing the likelihood of them turning around to bite you.

If you do not have another person to help break up the fight, you should still use the same method, with a slight alteration. The main difference is this one cannot be pulled off as quickly as the two person method can.

1) Go get a leash (allow the fight to continue while you do this).
2) Walk up and loop the leash around the back loin of one dog by either threading the leash through the handle. Dog often 'lock' during a fight, making this process easier than it sounds.
3) Now slowly back away and drag the dog to a fence or to an object that you can tie the leash to. By doing this, you effectively create an anchor for one of the dogs.
4) Then walk around and grab the back legs of the second dog and drag it away from the dog that is tied up. Remember to turn and circle as they release.
5) Drag the dog into a dog pen or another room before you release the back legs.

A final tip, is the use of a break stick. When a dog has locked onto another dog, and cannot be pulled apart, you should use a break stick to release the grip on the other dog.

1) Walk over to the dogs, straddle one that has a hold, and then lock your legs around the dog's hips just in front of the hindquarters. Make sure your legs are locked securely around the dog.
2) Your break stick will be in one hand, so with your free hand, grab your dog firmly by his collar and pull upward slightly.
3) Insert your breaking stick behind the molars where the gap is found. Sometimes you need to work the stick in just a bit if the gap is small. The stick should be inserted from ½ to 1½ inches into the dog's mouth.
4) Turn the stick as if you're twisting the throttle of a motorcycle. This action will cause the dog to readjust its grip, and it will bite onto the stick, releasing the other dog.
5) If both dogs have a hold, you will then have to break the second dog from the first.

Note: use this with caution. It's traditionally used to separate dogs in fighting rings, breeds that are bred and trained to be aggressive to dogs rather than humans, as well as bred and trained to get a grip and hold it rather than continually bite. Works best with pit bull and similar breeds. It's likely that other breeds will snap and bite unpredictably once their initial bite has been broken, putting yourself as a decent risk of harm.

Don't assume next time. ;P

The only safe way to break up a dog fight without being injured or injuring a dog is a premptive attempt to not allow it to happen at all. Otherwise it's not safe.

Your boss man is an ass clown. He pinned a dog with a chair. Nuff said.

He pinned an aussie down with a chair but bitched about you throwing a corgi in a cage? He sounds like a pussy

If you want to break a dogs train of throught grab it's back haunches, but be ready for that sum bitch to turn around and snap at you. If you give a dog a good pinch in it's haunches you'll get it's attention.

Unless this dog fight was over food i don't know what else to say except keep a lead on the dog you're handling.

My dog recently attacked another dog. She is an Australian Cattle Dog x Staffordshire Bull Terrier. The dog she attacked was a black Labrador that was accompanied by a Border Collie cross. The lab was twice her size and she made a proper go of it. The lab ran off yelping and I only just caught my dog as she was laying into the lab.

Not really offering any advice on how to catch or the best way to break up dog fights but if you're by yourself I can only suggest pushing the aggressor away and trying to pick up the defender. Not very sound advice but used to work when 2 of my Staffie's (both non - desexed males) would fight. That can be pretty vicious.

Anyway, here is my dog Jesse. She is about the size of a male Staffy. (Her mum was the full blood cattle dog and her dad was the full blood staffy)

One of my brothers used to do dog fights.

Never did mention how to break up a fight though...
