bridgesii emergency
    #19190946 - 11/26/13 09:02 AM (10 years, 2 months ago)

My trich has been outside for a while and recently its gotten down to -15c or so (~0f). This is obviously way too cold as today I've noticed the tip of my trich bent over, "wilted", and its sweating cactus goo. Is the column dead? The whole thing has lost turgidity. It looks like the bottom part of the column is doing slightly better, is it possible to save that?

I've cut their heads off and brought them inside. I hope they heal up okay. Any recommendations on climate regulation? It's 67-70f inside, should I limit their light at all? Find a cooler spot for them?

Frost bites will heal without cut. But anyway, you have cut them..
When you cut you should do it when your plant are at growing stage and has not get to dormancy cause plant doesn't have so good immune system to infections when they are cut at dormancy.

I have seen lots of frost bite tips where grows new pup without any surgery.

You should keep them at 20-25C temps and let cuts callous, then you can move cactus to more cooler temps to let it spent dormant time. Enough low temps you don't need light for cactus at dormant season.

Anyway, usually black ooze tips will dry and then cactus recover back and grow new pup from damaged frost bite tip. As you said you have cut it but if damage is not so big, you don't need to cut frost bites, it's very common to cactus at their habitat their tips can freeze and die but they will pup again anyway.

Cool, gotcha. I figured it might make a comeback on its own, but over half the height of my columns was frostbitten and I thought cutting would be safest.

Wow, that is cold.  Trichs should stay above 20-25f.  Depending how long they were at zero degrees i would guess they might die though i hope they live.  Keep us updated i would be interested to know how this turns out.  I hope they live!

Throw a see through bag over it to keep humidity up, also place a container of water inside the cover.. Or mist it with warm water routinely. Place in direct sunlight or in the path of a CFL household light.

Don't do this you do not want it in a humid environment at the moment.

Cheers

Thanks for the kind wishes. I've had these guys for close to three years now, and I really hope they live too. It's funny how attached I've grown to them!

They're sitting on top of my microwave next to the windowsill. I think the two pedro and pup will pull through. I'm not so sure about the bridge. :peace:
