gymnopilus luteofolius?

Pretty sure I just found my first active Gym species. It was growing singular in a large wood pile alongside laccaria and hypholoma. It is fairly dried out. I believe I can see bruising on the stem that is bluish but it looks more black than blue.

What do yall think?

Thanks guys. A big chunk of mycelium came up when i plucked it so i buried it in some doug fir chips in the yard maybe they will show up there in the future.

I think it will, it was nice healthy white mycelium that was so stringy that it held all the chips together when i pulled the mushroom and it pulled a big clump of chips. I broke it in two and buried in fresh (soaked) doug fir chips in a planter pot in my garden. I wont know if it worked for a year or two but the mycelium usually does its job well although ive never tried this with gymnopilus.

Lutes are much lighter in color and more yellow when they are that old.

Here is the best explanation I have seen.
Blood posted this in my "Ganzig's Gallery" thread.

here goes...
G. luteofolius matures to yellow... they very rarely bruise blue...

notice the margin...
also...

notice the gill color, attachment and "veil."
G. luteofolius is a less robust species that MATURES TO YELLOW!!!

look to the right...

the specimens on the right are a day or 2 older than those on the left...
yes, there are microscopic differences between the two "species..." Hesler didn't find them because he was most likely comparing different collections of G. aeruginosus...
G. luteofolius is much more rare than it is believed to be... it is likely much more prominent in the southern states...
AWESOME THREAD GANZIG!!

Thanks Ganzig i was thinking the easiest way to tell them apart was that one bruised easily and one doesnt. I didnt think the blackish areas on it counted as bluing so i thought lack of blueing, luteofolius.
But since its mature and still red that must suggest aeruginosa. Interesting I would like to see more yellow luteofolius, whenever I think of lutes i always think of them being red. Likely because ive never found them before and only seen pictures.

I think the easiest way to tell them apart is if you found it west of the Rockies it probably isn't luteofolius. We've all been calling aeruginosus luteofolius for so long that it's difficult to reconsider the concept. I flat out refused to accept it for three whole days!

This is how I think now as well but I just don't want to get into a discussion about it.
