    #19191743 - 11/26/13 12:19 PM (10 years, 2 months ago)

When i went to ren fest i quickly filled a piece of paper at the gate to enter in a sweepstakes.  Yesterday i get a call from a 1800 number saying i won;  supposedly 1 of 4 prices on top of a vacation of my choice from a company called 'Silverleaf Resorts'.  All i need to do is drive to Galveston, go on the tour of their resort and i need to present my ID and stuff as well.  What you guys think.  Is this for real?

after the phone conversation, i directed them to send me an email with details.  its as follows minus the pictures

" CONGRATULATIONS ****** *******,

This letter shall serve as confirmation of your telephone conversation with our representative on
MONDAY, NOVEMBER 25, 2013. You are GUARANTEED to receive one of the following awards: [missing pic]

Last sentence in caps is all you need to read.

You're going to texas for a 1 in 50,000 chance of winning something.  While there, you'll experience pressure to buy a timeshare so intense you'll feel like you're being anally raped.

Pretty standard scam actually.

actually, Galveston is about an hour or so drive from where im at.  Im in Houston Bro.  Im mostly wondering if i will actually recieve one of these prizes for the drive out there. I Dont have alot of money and thou $30 or so for gas isnt alot, i rather not spend it for nothing.  I have no intent on buying any timeshare as i am broke.  The only thing im interested in is one of the prizes.  A cruise to Jamaica sounds nice.  Too good to be true thou!?!

I personally wouldn't drive from houston to galveston in this weather. Not if i wasn't sure about getting the prize at least.

Read the print.  The odds of you winning prizes are in there.  You have a very good chance of winning LODGING for a vacation.  That is, you'll get a 5-day hotel stay for free.  This will probably be a shitty hotel, and at the worst possible time of year.  Probably like Sunday-Thursday in the middle of summer.  You'll be responsible for paying your way there and everything once you get there.

Other odds in the fine print:

The odds for this promotion are:
1) The new vehicle; verifiable retail value $49,000 or $49,000 cash; 1:53,130

2) $1,500 Shopping Spree to Saks Fifth Avenue, Nordstrom, Macy's, Sears or Wal-Mart (or the store of your choice); verifiable retail value $1,500; 10:53,130

3) Exotic five-day, four-night Island Getaway to your choice of Aruba, Hawaii (Oahu or Maui), Jamaica or Puerto Rico; average verifiable retail value $806. Voucher must be registered within 60 days and allows one full year to select and complete travel. You must pay a $50 refundable deposit prior to making a reservation. Travelers must be 21 years of age and are responsible for any applicable local, state or federal taxes as well as airfare, transportation, gratuities, meals and incidentals; 53,099:53,130

4) $500 Cash; 20:53,130.

I went to one of those. They offered free gas and a digital camera. It was a 45 minute drive so I did it.

It was a very high pressured time share sales pitch( I knew this going in) I was cycled between 4 salesman before I got my prizes. Took about 1.5 hrs of waiting and listening to presentation, then the one on one sales pitch.

20$ gas and the worst digital camera I've ever seen. I think is was 1.1 Mp

Not worth it... and I didn't buy the timeshare
