Mixing two prints for a syringe making
    #19190487 - 11/26/13 04:46 AM (10 years, 2 months ago)

Hi,

in most species genetic diversity is one of the factors that increase the likelihood of success for that species. In mammals individuals also tend to be healthier the further apart genetically the parents are (so the further away from inbreeding you are). This is all be quite simplified and maybe not translate well into mycology but here goes.

I am doing a test where I will take prints from three caps on top of each other (one print on top of the next one) and use that for a syringe. I was also thinking about throwing in a print from a different cubensis strain.

Now I know that many of you will hail the merits of cloning and you are right. I am however am not at the cloning stage yet in my skill, knowledge and resources. Spore syringes is where I am @.

So any thoughts on this and has anyone tried it with good, bad or bland results?

Best regards,
Nicotine.

The spores don't work like human genes to combine. only one of the three will survive from taking over the substrate first. i heard it from a while back.

Well, you heard wrong.

Since all the spores are of the same species, they'll combine genetics wherever they see fit.  The resulting product will have some strains resembling the individual parents and some strains representing a combination of genetics from some or all the parents.

This is exactly how it works in nature, with spores falling on the grass to be eaten by animals who then carry them to a new location for deposit near other mushrooms which then drop their spores in the same area.

Well then it just remains to be seen if there is any benefit in doing this.

Probably no benefit as any spore print already has a huge range of genetics - increasing that range doesn't equal better genetics.

If you were dealing with a spore print that you KNEW had limited alleles, and that the lack of genetic diversity was detrimental then mixing with another spore print of the same species would introduce variety... but it would also make sense to just start from a new MS and not mix with your limited gene pool... and I doubt your spore print is actually all that genetically limited in it's range of phenotypes it could potentially express.

Cloning is done to isolate the characteristics you observe in an ideal fruit, this allows you to intentionally limit the genetics to a known set of characteristics. Just because this is a single strain, and not a huge mix of strains as RR described combining "wherever they see fit", doesn't mean it lacks genetic diversity as you could always take a spore print from that clone and bam you have millions of different combinations of alleles waiting to germinate and combine.

You are mistaking the bottleneck principle in biology where a species suffers when it's gene pool become limited and genetic diseases can proliferate, in this case introducing additional genes into the gene pool is essential for the health of the species.  This isn't a good analogy for discussing a the genetics of a multi spore print....
