Strange memories on this nervous night in Las Vegas. Five years later? Six? It seems like a lifetime, or at least a Main Era—the kind of peak that never comes again. San Francisco in the middle sixties was a very special time and place to be a part of. Maybe it meant something. Maybe not, in the long run . . . but no explanation, no mix of words or music or memories can touch that sense of knowing that you were there and alive in that corner of time and the world. Whatever it meant. . . .
History is hard to know, because of all the hired bullshit, but even without being sure of “history” it seems entirely reasonable to think that every now and then the energy of a whole generation comes to a head in a long fine flash, for reasons that nobody really understands at the time —and which never explain, in retrospect, what actually happened.
My central memory of that time seems to hang on one or five or maybe forty nights—or very early mornings—when I left the Fillmore half-crazy and, instead of going home, aimed the big 650 Lightning across the Bay Bridge at a hundred miles an hour wearing L. L. Bean shorts and a Butte sheepherder's jacket . . . booming through the Treasure Island tunnel at the lights of Oakland and Berkeley and Richmond, not quite sure which turn-off to take when I got to the other end (always stalling at the toll-gate, too twisted to find neutral while I fumbled for change) . . . but being absolutely certain that no matter which way I went I would come to a place where people were just as high and wild as I was: No doubt at all about that. . . .
There was madness in any direction, at any hour. If not across the Bay, then up the Golden Gate or down 101 to Los Altos or La Honda. . . . You could strike sparks anywhere. There was a fantastic universal sense that whatever we were doing was right, that we were winning. . . .
And that, I think, was the handle—that sense of inevitable victory over the forces of Old and Evil. Not in any mean or military sense; we didn’t need that. Our energy would simply prevail. There was no point in fighting—on our side or theirs. We had all the momentum; we were riding the crest of a high and beautiful wave. . . .
So now, less than five years later, you can go up on a steep hill in Las Vegas and look West, and with the right kind of eyes you can almost see the high-water mark—that place where the wave finally broke and rolled back.
the grass is always greener...

I can tell u one thing. I was too young in the 60's, but in the 70's you never had to use a condom. Every girl was on the pill, and the syph and the clap were easily curable with an antibiotic shot. No Aids. No Herpes. The only time you saw a condom was when somebody blew it up to make a balloon animal at a party.

Dude that is so gay. I grew up as a punk / surfer/skater and we all knew it was totally lame and weak. What bullshit book did you steal those quotes from.

i'd say no, OP. my age (if i grew up in the sixties) would allow me to foresee the outcome of humanities progress as defunct and comparable to a wasted evening, and as such, i'd want to simply finish my life, and keep hope for the future for my posthumous non-existence.

I missed the Real 60's by a few years, ( I was 12 in 1969 ), but the 70's worked out for me... ...I had a good job, , cheap, plentiful drugs, free sex, (I never caught any STD.) No DUI laws, plenty of good bands. Tix for the weekend shows at the Phila. Spectrum were like 5 or 6 bucks. We went almost every weekend. Probably a contributing factor to my hearing loss in my left ear.
My older brothers were well involved in the 60's. I pinched my first bag of weed when I was 12. Where do you think I found my first stash of hash and white crosses? Those crosses were good speed at 50 cents each.
Yea, I'm cool with my Era ... the 70's !!... . . . .

the 60's seemed like a cool time where things weren't too simple but they weren't too hard either. that would have been my kind of living. and add the fact that psychedelics blew up and we were at the edge of a technological and spiritual revolution, i can't imagine a greater decade. the 70's seemed legit too. i think the 80's is where we fucked up though

We had our share of social and economic problems during the 1960's and 1970's. It wasn't a cakewalk for my parents by any stretch of the imagination.

I used to want to grow up in the 70s but I now I think the late 80s and 90s would have been better. I was born in 93 so I wasn't really old enough to experience it. The 00s where ok though I liked 2000 to about 2007-2008

Parrott said: Anyone ever watch "Midnight in Paris" ? A bit cheesy, but touches on this point well. Every generation wants to live in the last glory days. But really, these glory days come every 40-60 years it seems. Before the '60s it was the roaring '20s. The time of prohibition, woman's rights movement, etc. You know, Gatsby type shit. sounds fun too. Then before that, it was the Victorian age in the late 1800's. So much beautiful art and literature. And opium. Point being, is that the past always seems better when it's glorified like it is. Which it is. We're living is such an amazing fucking time right now, I'm so glad to be growing up in it. We're witnessing the rise of the internet. The mass globalization of humanity. The rise of the technological world and the death of organized religion. The legalization of marijuana, and the shunt of prejudice beliefs and actions.
Just saying, don't waste time trying to live in the past and miss the present. I guarantee we're gonna hear our kids and grand kids wishing they grew up when we did as well
Quote:
ModestMouse said: I love your response. We DO live in an abso-fucking-lutely amazing time to be a drug dabbling progressive member of society.
The only reason people will tell you otherwise is because the norms of the society we used to live in are being ripped apart at the seams. The government is failing, mass religion is failing, the drug war is failing, and the war on terrorism is failing. I hate to brag, but my generation (the kids in college right now) are not idiots. We see the shitshow our grandparents put us in, and when we get control of the wheel you better believe the car is going the opposite direction. We're going back home friends.
These past 5 years (and next 10 or so) are slated to become some of the most beautifully DIFFERENT years from our history. Pessimists will point to all of the problems and go "but we have to worry about THIS and THIS and..." but if you think about it there has never been a more connected and self-regulated world than the world of today.
We owe it to the fucking internet man. It's up there with Agriculture and Spoken word.
