Agar Petri Dishes

Hey guys, I have been looking into making some agar for quicker cultivating. In searching for good recipes I've noticed that literally all the Teks and instructions say that you should mix everything in a container PC, then pour the dishes in front of a flow hood/in a glove box.
That seemed to be a pretty accepted method, and the one that RR demonstrates. Well my question is this: I found a pretty all encompassing Tek somewhere else where someone mixed the agar, boiled it for a minute, poured into the petri dished and then PCed.
It seems like this would save come chance for contamination to me. Is there a reason not to do this, other than possibly boiling over?

This question has been asked an answered many times before. The search function or google is your friend.
Search no pour methods, which do what you are asking except they substitute a jar for the petri. Agar would boil over in the petri dish under pressure. No pour methods have their own set of issues however. It's up to you to decide which method is best for you.

I use no-pour because I don't have a flowhood, or a "legit" SAB.
Like Dark said, there are advantages and disadvantages to each method.
Actually, here is a thread that discusses exactly this from only about a week ago.
And the agar journal in my signature could help you in case you're looking for pictorials.

All you need is a SAB and a bottle of bleach/water mix in a spray bottle. Agar is more intimidating than it really is. My SAB is nothing more than a tote with two holes cut in it. I stuff my tyvek sleeves in the holes.
Here is how I do it. I wait about two hours for the agar to cool down a bit in my PC. I get my sleeve of petri's in my SAB with my erlenmeyer filled with agar. I also use a hot cup of water to place on the dishes after they are poured. I cut the sleeve so I can slide the dishes out and make two stacks when it's time to pour. I wipe everything down with Alcohol and then mist everything down with my bleach/water mixture, the bottom of the box also. Spray up in the air and let it fall down. I put my sleeves in the hole and let everything settle for about ten minuets.
Once I get to work,I go as fast as possible without stirring up any air currents. Stack your dishes into two stacks of ten. Pour your dishes and wrap them(optional), re stack them, slide the sleeve back over them and put the mug on top. Put your tyvek sleeves back in the arm holes and let them cool. A few hours later and they are ready to go. You can wait to use them if you want to make sure they are clean but I've noticed contams hardly happen.

Don't even need to do all that I spray the inside of my SAB with warm soapy water. Not like bleach or alcohol is going to sterilize the SAB anyway only sanitize so using bleach or alcohol is only going to make things rust fast or go boom if your flame gets too close. The only time I use alcohol in the SAB is to wipe the lids of g2g jars.

Thanks a lot for the quick replies everyone. Sorry for the faux pas, I've never heard the phrase "No pour method" until today.
I do have a simple glovebox, and contamination hadn't been an issue yet; however, I tend to lean toward whatever has the least steps possible. Looks like baby jars will probably work just fine for me. I'm mostly just like the idea of agar because you can quickly see contamination as opposed to waiting, checking cakes/grain and possibly losing a couple of setups in the process.
Again thanks for the advice guys. Assuming all goes well with the agar, I'll be trying out some WBS, Popcorn and Rye. Wish me luck.

I just use a couple pint whiskey bottles and put them in the basket of the sterilizer with a couple half filled Quart jars to keep everything upright. I put foil over the lids of the bottles with rubber bands over the foil and sterilize for 45 min.
I can't afford a couple erlenmeyer flasks.

With sterile work, this is absolutely key.

Thanks again guys, I eneded up trying some baby jars and one of my spare half pint jars. It's been about 24 hours and no contams yet. We'll give it another 24 and if all goes well, I'll put some LC in there and I'll post the end results.
