need to boil?

In pf ten does water need to boil to sterilize jars or is the steam enough? I put my jars in when the water was steaming heavily but not bubbling. Is it the steam or the temperature that sterilizes? Jars been in for about 40 minutes still a crap load of steam but no bubbles?

It is the steam, but you need the water to boil to get enough steam.
My 2 cents.

thanks for the reply. Got bubbles and turned it down a bit. So a hour to hour and a half is good?

I beleive anything above 180 sterilizes and water boils at 212. Thats fahrenheit. So theoretically no you dont need to boil but you need to keep at 180 or higher for ninety minutes. And that is substrate temp not water temp.
Ive never actually done the pf tek (done the jars but always baught em. Only ever prepared my own once i baught a pc and went to bulk) and im a newb though so someone else answer aswell please lol.

My thought was more bubbles = more steam.
I am a noob as well. My first 6 jars were steamed and then I went to the thrift store and scored a PC.

Bring the water to a rolling boil. Turn it down but make sure you're audibly bubbling. A little bit of steam is not enough. You need to create and intense heated vapor to uniformly heat the jars and get that heat to 'penetrate' into the center. The steam doesn't really go into the jars. It's just an expression. Though light steaming may work after a long long time. To get it done in 90 minutes you need intense steaming to get the temperature up high enough and maintain it.

Okay. I have gone from boiling to slightly below that. I'm at 76 minutes not visibly boiling but the pot is sealed tight with plenty of steam. Will I be good at 90 minutes? I don't want to have contains but don't want to dry the substrate

You probably will be ok if you just want to wing it. If it were me though Id like to keep atleast a slight boil to maintain temps and pressure in the pot so as to penetrate into the centers of the medium your sterilizing. And again, its not actually the steam that is doing the job, its called steaming but really its the temp range. You can stick something in 120 degree steam for eons, its still not going to sterilize. So keep that water boiling . Also, dont worry about drying out the medium. Aslong as you got water and steam in the pot its not going to dry out.
As far as not wanting any contaminates... You really wanna get a pc lol. Then again that might just be the "if your gonna do something do it right" mentality my dad drilled into me lol.

OK should I leave the jars sit and cool in the pot over night or can I take them out? Pcs are expensive haha.

You can take them out if you want to but do not inoculate them until they have cooled. You will kill the spores. If its just as easy to let cool in pot than I would do that. Just let em sit till cool and ready to innoc. This is just because it would be one less time that you admit your jars into a non sterile environment. The air in that pot is already as clean as your substrate and as safe as your gonna get so why not just let em sit.
Yeah a pc can be expensive to some. Especially students and such but it is WELL worth the investment.

Yes. Once you take them out, retighten the lids. Some people would suggest though that if you do it while there hot to tighten down and then relosen a tad bit to answer for exspansion/shrinkage due to heat. The lids will shrink a lot more than the glass when cooling and if you dont leave a little give they can become a bitch to get off after cooling.
