if it's necessary do it. There's no other way? Maybe you could get a part time seasonal job?

Unfortunately that is not an option.
How is getting a job "not an option". Sounds to me like its the "only option". Selling a used laptop will get you a bit of cash but its not a sustainable form of income or anywhere even close.

I mean I really don't see how that's possible. I don't know if you're implying you're in legal trouble or something but there are places people can work, even those who are not ideal employees.

Maybe he needs the money ASAP.
If it's for a good investment, then selling the comp sounds like a good idea. When/if that investment pays off you won't give a shit about losing some files

None of this makes any sense... I'm not even trying to be an asshole here but:
1. I don't see how getting a job can possibly be "not an option" when you're at the point that you have next to nothing of monetary value and are financially fucked.
2. I question how sound this "investment" is. I mean, no offense, but sinking money into something you deem to be a good investment that you can't elaborate on, when you're dead broke, and your previous financial decisions have led you to such desperation... I would question your financial intuition at this point.
3. The amount of money you'd get for a used laptop is not that much. Whatever great investment you claim to have lined up, is obviously a very high risk-high reward type investment if you plan to make any type of sustainable income from investing the small amount you would get from a used laptop. Typically, safe investments require a decent amount of cash that is set aside for the long term.
4. If you really have such a great financial opportunity and have no money, few items of any value and "no possibility of getting a job", and you need to post online asking whether you should sell your laptop because you'll lose files....??
I'm not trying to be rude, but I am truly baffled by everything in here.
