Forrester said: One thing - watch out for that polyfill! As soon as the fruits touch it they're going to grow into, and through it. You'll never be able to get the damn polyfill out of the fruits. Reishi isn't like other mushrooms that will just push up against it, they completely envelope it. Maybe you don't care about a couple fruits (you can still use 'em they're just a bit fuzzy), but they will grow all the way through the hole and form conks on the OUTSIDE of your tub if you don't do anything. You wouldn't believe what reishi will do to get to air.
Good to know What do you recommend?

Eh, it's up to you - I'm OCD so I can't stand having a mess of fruits growing through polyfill. It's not really a big deal, unless your winters up there are as dry as the sahara desert like they are here, then the out-of-tub conks might not be happy. Also they might entirely block your air exchange.
When I did my sideways tub that's why I put the holes in the lid instead of the tub itself. I know you were re-using tubs though...
Maybe plug up those holes and make multiple big-ass holes in the lid? They'll still run into it eventually... You could also ditch the lid and cover with clear painter's plastic with a bunch of x's cut into it, that's how I do my bucket reishi grows. Just some ideas!
Tyvek would work but won't give much air - fine if you want antlers though

Well I decided to remove the poly as it was already getting snared up, and re taped the holes. These tubs have a lot of FAE with the holes to begin with so how they perform without the large poly holes will give me a good indication of how to proceed with my next grow. The tub that was a mix of coir verm and fuel pellets definitely looks different from the just pellets tub. Less metabolites for sure in that one.
Nuff blabbin here's the pics
Coir verm pellets tub

Excuse the poor composition of the shots, I was in a bit of a rush Next ones will be better

That is an interesting comparison of the two different substrates!

Yes I now want to do some more tubs with just coir and verm. Does look like the ones in the pellets coir verm tub are a little thicker/heavier and it was a few days behind the other one. I wonder if the extra water held by the coir/verm is the reason? Regardless it will be interesting to see how it all plays out.

It's hard to draw a conclusion based on just the two. I have grown bags side by side with exactly the same sub and spawn rate and have had them look significantly different. Worth an experiment though.

I hear ya, cubensis can be quite unpredictable as well, even with an isolate little variables can make a big difference in how a sub pins, fruits etc. I would want to run several variables and controls before I would make any real conclusions.

Good point, this is very true.

I was wondering this too - who's strain are you working with?
