i believe you can sterilize them by sucking up boiling water a few times.

There are a number of ways you can reuse that syringe. Filling it up with water and then covering with foil before pressure cooking is the best way, but you can also suck up a bunch of boiling water and squirt it out five times before filling it one last time with boiling water and letting it slowly cool. The second way almost always works.

Boiling water will clean out the inside of your needle pretty well, and if you're still feeling insecure about it, heat it up until it's red hot just like you'd do before any inoculation. Nothing, and I mean nothing can survive that.

I fill a pot with water and drop the syringe in. After the water has boiled for ten minutes, pull the syringe out and suck in the boiling water, swish it around and squirt it out. Do this a few times. The syringe will be sterile enough for mycology, I assure you. I've done it this way for years. RR

When you can buy a 100 count steri-pack of 10ml syringes for around $15 including shipping, is it worth risking contamination from improper sterilization?

I got my syringes+needles for 8$/100... I wonder what would make you reuse one?

sterilization is sterilization there's either nothing left or something left with the capacity to reproduce. You cant have more or less sterile so yes it is worth risking.
Sometimes you can "cut corners" in this hobby but only when you really know how things work.

After 20 years in laboratory and biotech work, I know that sterile is a binary situation. My question is regarding the time/risk/cost situation.
For around $25 total I can get 100 sterlie syringes and needles, which saves me the time and effort of sterilizing 100 syringes and needles, and gives me the peace of mind that they were done properly. (Throughout all my cell culture work, I never had a BD product come up contaminated.) I don't really consider that 'cutting corners.'

What you need to do is fill them with water about 20% then put them inside a jar with the top on but loose and some water in the bottom , PC for 30 minutes , Seal as you take them out I believe
Thats about the method I hear you should do so that you get inside and outside nice and sterile and you have sterile water to work with when you do use your syringes

I'm just saying it's not a risk at all if you do it right and you only need one syringe.

it takes me a lot more time and effort to manifest $25 then it does to start my pc! "effort" lolz you make starting a pc and then waiting sound like it's manual labor.. and trust me, when i pc a syringe for 30 mins i have more than enough peace of mind.

I have used the same four syringes for all of my grows. One of them came to me full of a trichodermia contaminated lc and I have yet to have a problem with it.

Like many things in this hobby (agar, sterile air, sterilization equipment), the path we take on this issue is dependent on whether we have more time or money. I think we can all agree on that.

Agreed. I myself have more time than money.
