I was looking for something more like £150 rather than a few hundred, I've looked at Bresser, Amscope and the Brunel's site but I can't seem to find what I'm looking for.

The second one here comes to £174 including VAT: http://www.brunelmicroscopessecure.co.uk/acatalog/Page-2-11.html

as far as over all quality; how does OMAX compare to AmScope? OMAX 40X-2000X Lab LED Binocular Compound Microscope

I have never tried the OMAX scopes, but a lot of people have them and my impression is that they are about the same.

Both Amscope and Omax will do everything you ever need to do for mycology.  The thing that really matters is how you use it - How you prepare the slides, and how well you can assign meaning to what you are seeing.

I was using a several thousand dollar Zeiss scope all day today and it does give sharper images due to the A-Plan objectives.  It is easy on the eyes and fun to use, but not worth the extra several thousand dollars unless you sit in front of the thing for hours every day.
